Heck of a Deal

Not only is this a nice resort with a huge beach, but, like all Barcelo Resorts, the food and drinks are included in the daily rate. If you watch out for discounts you can pick up a room for about $70 USD which includes all you can eat and drink, between roughly 7 am. til 9 pm. The other hotels near Montelimar can't touch that with a 10' pole. That is not to say there aren't other nice places there. It's just that its hard to beat that kind of deal in comparison to the other places nearby. Service is ok, not 5 Star, but good enough. Beach is huge, swimming pool has plenty of room. They have horse back rides and ATV tours but these are not included in the daily rate. But they are well worth taking some time to enjoy. Take the Pochomil/Masachapa ATV tour to get in touch with the real locals of Nicaragua. The reason is that Barcelo is like another country inside a country. You won't get a feel of Nicaragua if you don't leave the resort. Don't worry...its very safe. Check with the tour office on site. They have some great tours like hiking to remote petroglyph sites (only about a 2 mile walk), but it blew our minds, also the ATV guys have a snorkeling tour that is pretty nice too.

My first all-inclusive resort experience

3 nights here were not enough. The facilities are top-notch, and the beach is perfect.

Nicaragua's Best Resort Hotel

by Beast about Barcelo, Montelimar

Although they say they are a 5 Star Hotel, I would give them a 4 Star for sure. The resort has a very large property and about 3 miles of beach front. All food and drink are included in the price which is amazingly competitive with hotels of far less appeal and quality. The Casino is "muy chiquito" (very small) but fun enough. Nightly you will find a variety of activities offered in the back of the casino. If for nothing else you should venture up there one evening to watch the sunset. Hard to beat the view. Barcelo has ATV tours and horse tours which are available at additional costs. Both offer excellent tours throughout the resort jungle and beach or off the resort to get a real Nicaragua experience. Don't worry. Its safe. Check out their website barcelo.com for more details. Very nice, peaceful environment and beach front. Pools not too bad either. Buffet is ample and typical. The restaurant near the casino has better food but is not included in the resort fee.

Almost All Inclusive Hotel

Montelimar is Barcelo. There is no separate town. The closest town is Masachapa which is about 1 mile south of Barcelo, Montelimar. After about 2 days at the resort people seem to get a bit restless and begin looking for stuff to do outside of the resort. Barcelo has a huge beach that is seldom croweded. If you walk northwest (away from the main resort) you will find at least a mile of your own private beach. But bring you drinks with you because there is no service once you leave the main beach front. The beach is perfectly secure although, just like anywhere, keep an eye on valuables if you hope into the water. A few locals typically walk through the remote beach area fishing and looking for clams. The surf at this beach is pretty weak for surfing, but perfect for beginners. Better waves are found up the beach a few miles but it is too far to walk and there are no roads. Might rent an ATV to get there as an option. For additional costs, there are ATV rentals and tours including a snorkeling tour and a tour to Masachapa and Pochomil by ATV. Both are tons of fun. There are also horse back tours on the premises. Take a ride either in the morning or the afternoon when the temperatures are cooler and/or to check out the sunset from a remote section of the huge Barcelo Beach. Guided horse tours are also available and are located next to the ATV tour/rental location. Check with local tour operator Inspiration Tours at www.inspirationtours.org or inquire at reception for the tour office at Barcelo for such activities.

"Barcelo, Montelimar ATV Tours"

Barcelo has ATV tours and rentals near the tennis courts. It is not included in the price of your stay but well worth the experience. They have tours that can take you about 18 miles up the beach, for an hour or so in the jungle on the Barcelo property, to the local towns of Pochomil and Masachapa or on an incredible snorkeling tour. Inquire with reception and they will direct you to the ATVs.

Barcelo Montelimar Hotel

by o5o

Hi,
Has anybody stayed in this hotel with kids (6 y.o. and 3 y.o.)?
I am thinking of going there the last week of March 08 and wondering:
1) How safe is the ocean? polution? Do we need to expect high waves in March?
2) How child friendly is the kids club? What do they do all day? Do they have some sort of organized activities for kids?
3) What is make-up of the hotel clientele? MY understanding is that 50% Canadians, 40% Europeans+ Yankees, 10% South Americans

4) has anybody driven with kids in Nicaragua? Do we need to have a car seat or can we just wing it for 90 minutes drive from Managua to Barcelo?
5) Are there any kids activities nearby? For my kids - watching a monkey in the jungle or visiting pineapple farm would be more than enough
6) Is Granada a kid frienldy place?

Thank you very much in advance for your advice,

Well you are about right, 80% Foreigners and 20% latinamericans and locals,1 hour drive from Managua, you need no car seat in Nicaragua, activities inside barcelo for kids, prizes given.Granada, you need to go to las isletas, there you will see the monkeys at the big lake, also you can ride the carriages pulled by horses and do not miss the Loma de tiscapa, there is a Costarrican company that safely cross you thru the lagoon having alot fun, suitable and safe for children.Do not miss Leon, beautiful spanish town, also go to Masaya Volcanoe Park, only 30 minutes from Managua and the tropical forest, Selva negra.
