Hotel El Pantano: Best hotel in the North of Nicaragua

Recently I spent a couple of wunderfull days in Hotel El pantano in the north of Nicaragua in a small town called Jalapa. The owner is a dutch man who came to Jalapa to work on a forestry project, met his local wife there, married and stayed to live..... After his contract finished he started his hotel. The hotel is built in a traditional local style but has all the comfort of a modern hotel. And best of all: its room rates are still very local: just about USD 16.00 for a fully equipped double room with hot water, private bathroom and cable TV (about USD 11.00 for a single room). The hotel is build in a green area of about 3.5 Has just outside the main centre. Also the restaurant is very good with great terraces and small "ranchos" as the locals call them. For about USD 7.00 you can have 2 big pieces of chicken, fried fries, rice and green salad. And we drank a cool beer with it too for this price! The owner is a very helpfull guy who gave us a lot of tips to visit in the area. Its a great place for making day trips, either walking or on horse back. The central valley is very productive and the surrounding mountains make for spectacular views and really interesting meetings with the local people. You can go around alone and never ever feeling unsecure! We really recommend this place to anyone who is interested to visit Nicaragua without wanting to bump into other tourists and meet the original and traditional country life style of Nicaragua. Ah, and best of all: they even have a cybercafé on the hotel grounds with a fast ADSL line to stay in contact with your friends and family at home!
