hostal joxi: a simple hostel

If I remember correctly, Joxi was chosen simply because it was the first place we saw, it was ok and the price was acceptable (around 20 something dollars for a double room with private bathroom and air-conditioning).
It really wasn't anything special, but the sheets were clean and the bathroom was ok, so...
I'm sure that if we actually had taken the time to look at more places, we would've found something nicer.
There are also small hotels, more expensive but certainly offering more comfort.
In any case, it's not difficult to find accommodation in San Juan del Sur.

Hotel Joxi

There are several budget hotels in San Juan del Sur and I saw three before I came to Hotel Joxi. Hotel Joxi felt right, only half a block from the beach and with a nice common area upstairs with chairs, sofas and hammocks where you can sit reading or talk to other people.

I liked my room. It was big with a bathroom and a breeze was coming in through the bathroom window. There were both an air-condition and a fan, but I didn’t use them. There was also a TV in the room. The room was 300 cordobas, or 15 dollars, per night (July 2009). My room was in the end of the corridor so it was quiet, except for my loud neighbour coming home late one night. The walls are very thin.

The first morning I asked for breakfast because I had seen the sign, but I don’t think they do breakfast often as they didn’t have much. Well, when I later paid for my stay they told me I didn’t have to pay for the breakfast. That was kind of them.

Playa El Coco: Casa Mariposa

When we arrived at Casa Mariposa we were warmly greeted by Fredis the care taker of the house. We immediately noticed the amazing infinity pool over looking Playa El Coco, Coco beach, and in the far Costa Rica. The view was unobstructed and breath taking!

The house is the nicest house in the area with a 24 hr care taker, pool, wood burning brick oven, hammocks, nicely furnished, fully furnished kitchen, TV (not that you need), remote A/C, a great sound system, and wireless internet. The house is just a short walk to the 2 mile semi private stretch of beach, where you can enjoy long walks, catch an amazing sunset, or catch some waves. Also located on the beach is a great little restaurant with fresh fruits, a good selection of food, and delicious beverages. All of us had an excellent time, great weather, and never felt more relaxed and care free.

I felt safe and secure in Nicaragua and at the house. I loved my stay at Casa Mariposa and would highly recommend this house for your time in Nicaragua over any hotel.

Casa Mariposa: Playa Del Coco great house

Casa Mariposa is a fantastic house. I would highly recomend staying here. The view is among the best within this gated community on the beach in Playa Del Coco, including an excellent infinity pool. Fredis, who takes care of the property was excellent and cooked for us the week we stayed -everyone enjoyed it. It is very close to the beach were the turtles nest, and there are other beaches close by between Playa Del Coco and San Jaun Del Sur. There is a resturant on the beach which is very nice. Having visited several of the beaches, view this as one of the best in this area. It was a very contemporary/modern house, very nice bathrooms. The kitchen, dining room, living room and outside living areas were comfortable and felt like staying in a very high end home. Fans, air conditioning when needed available, great lighting. We used the stereo a lot and it worked great, as did the internet access. There is a mini super on site which really had a fairly good assortment of food and beverages when you cannot get to town.

Unique Quality: View of ocean from house, infinity pool, well outfited home. Onsite caretaker/chef excellent.

Hotel Hamacas: Cheap, Clean and Close

Located 150 meters from the port of San Jorge, Hotel Hamacas offers a tranquil and safe atmosphere, in close proximity of the bars, restaurants, and discotheques that are lined up in front of the beach.

The rooms are comfortable and have private bath and cable TV. Breakfast is included in the prices.

Hotel Gran Oceano is a spacious hotel only 50 meters from the seafront. The setting is friendly and there are lots of plants inside. The hotel is well maintained and the rooms are clean. Hotel Inn on the Pacific.

I found this hotel through Hostel World, it was not cheap but it has a perfect location just in front of the beach, the room has a balcony to enjoy the sunset. It´s a new hotel with very nice rooms and a good bathroom. The breakfast is included (typical Nicaraguan food) and is served in a pleasant courtyard by the pool. Very friendly staff.

This two story hotel is a 1/2 block from the church in San Juan del Sur. Friendly staff and clean rooms. Three of shared a room for $30 a night with A/C and cable t.v. It is located on a quiet block but walking distance to beach and restaurants. Great pizzeria on the corner.

Casa Oro: A backpacker's place

At only hundred metres from the beach in San Juan del Sur, and just as far from the busstop, you'll find the guesthouse Casa Oro. This guesthouse is popular with backpackers and it is a very good option to stay. They have private bedrooms here, but I stayed in the dorm.

A bed in the dorm costs about 5 dollars per night, and includes fresh blankets and a place somewhere in one of the bunkbeds. The dorm is clean and you have enough space to stall all your stuff. The staff also pays attention to all their guests, so if you don't belong in the rooms, you don't get in.

The guesthouse has good toilet and shower facilities, they have a kitchen that can be used by all guests and a nice area where you can sit in a hammock or on one of the seats on the nice patio. In the evening they play music here, they serve drinks and it is a good spot to meet other travellers. At (I believe) 22:30 the music is turned off and you're expected to be quiet: either you're going to sleep, or you get out to find another place to have a beer.

Unique Quality: Casa Oro also is a good place to get information about San Juan del Sur. If you want to know anything about the visits you can make to the seaturtles around here. Or if you want to go surfing on one of the desolate beaches around SJDS, Casa Oro is the place to be and to book your tours.

Casa Mariposa: Casa Mariposa, A Vacation for the Senses

It's very hard to put our experience at Casa Mariposa into words, but it was important to us to share this tip with everyone who may be considering any kind of trip to Central or South America or the Caribbean so that they may also enjoy what we did. Our senses were incredibly satisfied...like the ocean view from the infinity pool, the delicious breeze from the overhead fans in every room, the sound of the pacific ocean, the fresh smell of lavender every morning and the sway of the hammocks under our relaxed bodies as we watched the sun set. Its quite possible that we had a perfect 5 days at Casa Mariposa.

Here are links to Casa Mariposa both on Virtual Tourist and on the World Wide Web:

Casa Mariposa on Virtual Tourist%

Having been traveling around Nicaragua for two weeks prior to our arrival, we were overjoyed with the clean, comfortable and relaxed environment that the house has.

Unique Quality: We loved being greeted by Fredys, who is one incredibly special person and who cleaned up after us in the most unassuming way, leaving a trail of lavender scent each morning. The house felt like home, with very comfortable bedrooms, a fantastically well-stocked kitchen, the coziest of couches perfect for reading and napping, bathrooms so beautifully renovated they are a feature in our snapfish album, and the pool. The pool is warm, but refreshing and as you float on the water's surface you can look over the infinity edge as if you are floating on the entire pacific ocean. This is a treat! We've set a photo of the pool to our computer's desktop, but we hope to go back in real life sometime soon.
