Finca Mérida, Ometepe by JenniferG At Isla de Ometepe there are a few places to stay and one of them is Finca Mérida which is beautifully located at the lakeside. There's nothing around but it's a good place to start your hike to the volcano. You can rent horses and peddleboats or lie around in the hammocks all day. They have really good food and for dinner you can sign up for the communal buffet. There are only dorms available. You pay around $4,- p.p. excl. meals
Every night beautiful sunsets over the lake and after sunset millions of fireflies appear!! It's like a dream!

Kitchen of Hospedaje the Casa Oro by JenniferG We checked all the places around San Juan del Sur but this is the place where we ended up. They have spacious dorms as well as double rooms, free lockers, shared bathroom, community kitchen, barbecue and a garden. We paid (low season price!) $3,- p.p. for a dorm bed. They rent bikes here, but don't rely on them to much. I was riding a children's bike! :-) Theme: HostelPrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: On a side street from the mainstreetDirections: From the busstop keep on walking towards the beach. Take the second or third street to the left. It's there at your right hand.

pic.: www.thebeardedmonkey.com by JenniferG We couldn't leave this place! One of the best hostels to stay in Granada is The Bearded Monkey. A cool place with an inside garden with hammocks and hanging chairs, internet, pooltable, bookexchange and a really good restaurant! They have spacious dorms as well as double rooms. The atmosphere is really laidback and it's a great place to meet people. Prices for a dormbed are around $3,- p.p. excl. meals.
The real laidback atmosphere and great facilities!

The grounds of Jardin de Italia by epicult Right in the heart of Barrio Marta Quezada are two good mid-range places to stay. Hotel Los Felipe: Nice people and a nice place. They were full but, I was able to take a look around. $15 - 20 for a double, depending on options (A/C, TV, etc.). The owner (speaks English) is a very nice helpful person that called to see if Jardin de Italia had any rooms available. Jardin de Italia: Nice place with 5 or 6 private rooms with private bath. Clean, decent mattresses, with A/C (didn't work while we were there) but considering that we're Canadian and spend over half our lives in freezing conditions, who needs A/C?. A fan was plenty good. The proprietress is very lovely, loves to chat (Spanish only though) and occasionally may require your rolling skills ;-) If you require translation skills, her kids are usually around during the day.
There's a great little tienda (across from Ticabus/La Casa Azul) that serves liter beers for 30 cordobas/$1.30 US. The owner, an older lady who also runs the store, is SOOO nice and loves to chat endlessly. Grab a seat, relax and chill upon arrival. 1 block from Shannon's pub (ex-pat hangout with 'real' Guinness from tap), a short walk from a large mall w/ATM machine. Jardin (and Los Felipe) are also a short cab ride from Carretera Masaya and all the nightlife you could ever soak up. Theme: HotelPrice: US$20-40 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: The heart of Barrio Marta QuezadaDirections: It's difficult to give directions for anywhere in Nicaragua... Nica's use the lake and landmarks. I won't attemp that here. Just ask your cabbie or a local.

Derek's - La Casa Grande by epicult Beyond belief... surreal, stunning
Lush jungle in the back, perfect golf greens (natural) on the grounds and a beautiful view of the Atlantic in front (built up on 2-3 meters of volcanic lava). Not to mention an unreal vista, amazing snorkelling (out in front) and cheap accomodations. Dorm style: $5 a person (sleeps up to five) Small cabañas: $10-12 US La Casa Grande: $20 US No running water, no electricity but all the peace and dreamy-ness you could ever ask for or imagine. Theme: OtherPrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Windward side of the islandDirections: About a 20 minute walk along the beach (from Casa Iguana) or on the trail that runs through the middle of the island (quite muddy during wet season). Well worth it if you looking to "really" escape it all and chill.

One of many chill areas by epicult For ten dollars a night Juana will rent you a very simple little cabinita right on the beach. There are no creature comforts here. No running water or electricity. (This is true for the entire island w/the exception of Casa Iguana which has quasi running water and wind powered electricity.) In return you get 24 hour access to a beautiful settings on the edge of the world. Toilets and showers are shared. You flush with a bucket and wash yourself with a bucket. If you need a mirror ask Juana to borrow her "looking glass", a small compact makeup mirror. Juana also cooks up mean fish, chicken and lobster meals for $6.00 a plate and has an endless supply of beer ($1.00) and rum ($5.00-$8.00 a bottle). Simple, effective and exactly what we all need to keep us real :-).
Jump out of bed and straight into the Caribean. Enjoy a few drinks with fellow travelers under thatched roof chill areas (see pic) or grab a hammock and relax. Don't be surprised if you step out of your hut (in the middle of the night) to find the ocean has made its way to your doorstep. Those crabs bite! by MalenaN Well, I have never been staying here but I have been here for many other reasons. To have coffee at the terasse, tea and cakes at teatime, eat breakfastbuffe, to buy a newspaper , swim in the pool or visiting at special events. Once I even had my hair cut at the barbershop.
