Los Quetzales Lodge: Birding in the cloud forest
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Named for one of the most spectacular birds in Central America.
Los Quetzales Lodge has four cabanas tucked into the forest at 6,800 feet above sea level.
It is a very blumpy 20 minute ride by four wheel drive from Guadalupe.
When we arrived it was raining so hard we could hardly see out the windows of the van.

After we arrived we still had a nice little climb up to our cabana.
The cabanas are spacious, wood burning stove, hot water showers, but no electricity
There is a lady that will come in of an evening and cook you some fresh fish for dinner.

The birds will keep you entertained for hours.
Huge Violet Saberwings, Magnificent Hummingbirds, and White-throated Mountain gems are easily viewed at the feeders and flowers.
We also saw the beautiful Replendant Quetzal in the trees just a few feet away from our balcony. That is what we had came here hoping to see.

Casa De Campo: You may see a sloth
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Only 20 minutes drive from the International airport and you are in the green mountains of the Charges National Park.
Casa De Campo has seven comfortable and well decorated rooms.
It is home to many rare birds.
There are trails and roads galore.
We were out on the road in front of the hotel, looking for birds, when I spotted a big ball of fur in a tree. Finally it moved and to my surprise it was a three-toed sloth. I was so excited. I went back and checked on it several times that day. It moved some but very slowly.

They have a nice pool with a jacuzzi, massage and mud baths.
The food is good. The owner grows her own organic vegetables and herbs.

    Canopy Tower: Eco Hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • My very excited guide man pushed me in front of a telescope and there, in perfect sharp detail, was my very first harper eagle, a rare Central American bird.

The view itself was breathtaking, rainforest as far as the eye could see, the rising sun running like a slow fuse along the length of the Panama Canal, the day's first boat sailing smoothly through the trees. We were staying in the appropriately named Canopy Tower, once a US-owned radar tower, just outside Panama City, now converted into a luxury eco-lodge.

I was standing on the observation deck, a wide balcony running around the tower's 9m high geotangent dome (a variation of Bucky Fuller's famous geodesic dome), and was level with the top of the trees. Barely meters away from us was a troop of black howler monkeys. The male was greeting the day, his deafening calls a cross between a tiger in pain and the sea trapped in a cave. The females ignored him; clinging to the very tips of one of the tallest trees was a tiny baby moving about in a wobbly fashion. The females watched his every move, hands outstretched to catch him in case he fell, every so often making vain attempts to bring him down; there was a synchronous series of gasps and winces from the primates on the observation deck.

Canopy Tower, in the heart of Soberania national park, is simply one of the best places in the world to visit if you're a bird watcher, but if, like me, you're in the "quite-interested-but-short-attention-span" category, it is an amazing, beautiful and relaxing place to visit.

cabanas coco blanco: Gilligan's Island Cabins!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I had to check other- since this was like no other hotel I have ever stayed in. Coco Blanco is a tiny island of the San Blas Islands.( it takes about 10 minutes to walk around the entire thing!) A great Italian, Piero, is working with a Kuna family to set up their business of running a hotel.

There are three quaint cabins- basic accomodations- bamboo huts, running water, toilet that is flushed by sea water. The island is gorgeous, the sea, even more so...and the three meals that are included are absolutely deliciously cooked by Piero to your taste. If you don't mind roughing it a bit- you have to check this place out!

Amazing view, to say the least...your cabin is feet from the most crystal blue Caribbean water i have ever seen. Delicious food too!

Hotel Montreal: Pool Party at Hotel Montreal
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Cool place with a clean rooftop pool. Make as much rucus as you want, you'll never see anyone up there. About $30.00 US a night gets you a decent double with AC, private bathroom and it's a very central location. It's a good price for the city.

As a Canadian, the name had a certain ring to it???

A nice, clean rooftop pool that is open 24 hours a day with a great city view.

  • Old Port in Portobelo - Panama
    Old Port in Portobelo
    by alza
    Send Photo to a Friend
This is the old port in Portobelo, on the Caribbean Sea side of Panama. The pic was taken as I rode into town at nightfall so it's dark. I didn't know it then but the blue sailboat in the background is the Golden Eagle, on which our happy group was to sail to Colombia the next morning.

Our group was coming together for the first time in Portobelo, and the captain had arranged for us to meet there the night before we were to sail away at 6 a.m. He suggested that we all check into the hostel smack in the middle of town, where the bus leaves all passengers. I think it's called The Mission but my notebook was lost later so can't be sure. It doesn't matter, 'The' hostel is impossible to miss: old Spanish-style building with wooden balconies overlooking the minuscule square, with a bar at street level. Supposed to be about UDS5. I asked for a dorm or a room but the place was full and the owner got a man to take me and my luggage to a guesthouse close by, where I got a whole bungalow for $10.

Still, I didn't want to miss the gang so I hung around the Mission and watched the comings and goings, hoping to spot a blond head before too long. There was a No Smoking sign at the Mission bar so I settled conspicuously on the terrace of the restaurant across the street and tried to look as foreign as I could. I was the only foreigner around so I didn't have to attempt a salsa to prove my point. Two beers later, the captain and his girlfriend joined me, and then the others trickled in. We had a great evening making contact, ensuring we were ready for departure etc., all this in a true warm Caribbean night under the stars. Portobelo is small and authentic, you can't get more laid back than this place, and all we could do was to let the atmosphere wrap itself around us. There's nothing to do there but to feel good so why fight it?

One of the gang members was sleeping on board, so was the captain and girlfriend of course. The others were at the Mission. I was worried that we might miss each other at 5.30 a.m. the next morning so I told everyone where the bungalow was and the name of the owner (this was a private house, no signs and in fact, no address.) The only indications you can give sound like this: "Ask for Emilio's house. He's not there these days but his son Teo lives two houses down Main Street, where 5 or 6 men are always having a beer on the front lawn, watching the world go by. These guys will find Teo, who has the key to his father's house and to the bungalow in the back." I really would have preferred that one of my group walk over to Emilio's house, only 2 minutes away, since the beer-drinking guys weren't likely to be on the lawn at 5.30 a.m., but we were all too relaxed for such an effort.
The next morning, I was just rolling my suitcase down to the street when a muscular Canadian from our party appeared to help me get to the old port and GO!

So you have three options for accommodation, the Mission, a guesthouse or on board your sailing ship (must be arranged with the captain.)
