Las Vegas Hotel Suites: Comfort in the Cangrejo Area

Las Vegas Hotel is situated in good neighborhood and offers reasonable prices with true comfort and an friendly ambience. The prices are not rock bottom and I paid $77 a night for a large single with private bath. The rooms also come with a small refrigerator and a small kitchen sink. The Las Vegas Staff was friendly and also spoke good English. There is a modestly priced restaurant in the hotel, Caffe Pomodoro that serves many Italian pasta dishes. The hotel also has a Gym room with exercise machines and a Business Center for internet etc. Wifi access is available in the lobby and in all rooms. Just a short stop outside the hotel is the Veneto Casino. Across from the casino are internet cafes and Telephone Centers where you can make calls all over the world for low prices. Here also you will find the well known restaurant "Cafeteria Manolo".

Dos Palmitos bed and breakfast Panama: Dos Palmitos is the best!

We stayed three days in this wonderful place, owned by a Dutch lady who speaks about
5 languages and goes out of her way to please her guests. We really felt at home as the
service was great,also thanks to Arnoldo and Roger.
Reading some comments I do not understand why people said it is an isolated place.
The taxis are at the end of the street and the main road two streets below.
We walked to the top of Ancon Hill and passed La Estancia bed and breakfast. Now that facility is way up the hill and there you really depend on taxis. But not DP.
We walked to the Casco Viejo and took the bus to the Miraflores lock for 25 and 35 cents. It was fun to discover and see that a lot of things are not so organized in this country.
We would recommend Dos Palmitos to everybody and will certainly stay there again.

Dos Palmitos has excellent service. Wonderful beds and rooms decorated with taste. There are photos of the beginning of the 20th century (opening of the Canal) on the walls, nicely framed and the rooms are decorated with posters of around the same time. It is all a mixture of colonial memorabilia and modern confort. There is a guest living room with a computer and wifi. The atmosphere in the guesthouse is very laid back and the owner gives everybody a key so that they can come and go as they please. There were even fine wine glasses to use
in case we brought a bottle with us. The kitchen was for guest use only.
Price wise this place was also very reasonable compared to what we experienced down town.
We paid 90dlrs in a place that was not clean and the breakfast so so. Dos Palmitos breakfast was plentyfull and exquisitely served. The owner even got up at 4 in the morning to prepare a breakfast to go and make sure the taxi would indeed come to pick us up.

Perla Real: Isla Contadora

For two nights, Perla Real was the go to place for Isla Contadora. The room was well air conditioned with a comfortable bed and good shower. You can rent a golf cart to get around the island from the owner. I suggest it highly. The island is only 1.2 square miles, but it is a roller coaster of an island and it will wear you out walking in the hot sun. The breakfast is provided by a staff member and it is extra on the total for the stay ($5.50 per person).

Bill the owner could not have been nicer. He's very funny, and very accomodating. His hospitatility even made our stay much more pleasant. Just ask him if the little jelly fish are biting.

Here is my opinion of Isla Contadora. It's not for me. It really does have nice beaches in some spots, but it is a fairly boring place, with roads that need paving. Their are no bikes to rent...because the owners of the hotels want you to rent the more expensive motorized vehicles. Not too many choices for places to eat either. I will recommend two, so you can read it under restaurants. So, if you must one night will be plenty enough. If you do more than one night, I suggest taking a charted boat (40 to 50 dollars) to Casaya or Casayetta Island (1 hour boat ride) and see if you can buy some of the pearls that the natives harvest.

Casa Sucre: Casco Veijo, Panama City's old historic district

This restored building is in an attractive location, close to everything in Casco Veijo. The rooms are not the most spacious, but they are charming, clean, and the shower works really well.

Near the presidential palace, Casa Sucre is wonderfully situated to great restaurants and bars, and even more interesting architecture. Casco Veijo is the mini Old San Juan and Habana of central america. Go before it changes too much.

Yandup Island: Commarca Kuna Yala, San Blas

The most wonderful place on earth, or at least competing to be.

The Kuna Yala are native ameri-indians that have a fierce independant nature, shrewd business skills and so much to teach and be intrigued by. The have inhabited Colombia and Panama for centuries.

Hotel Veracruz: Hotel Veracruz

Hotel Veracruz is a 2 star hotel in the centre of Panama City. It was a good medium range hotel for some years ago, but it has deteriorated lately. I was satisfied with the service when I was there, but many people complain on Internet about unfriendly and uncaring reception staff.

Well, for US$8, you get a small quadrant with a nice sized bed and a fan. The door has a lock that can be opened by key and a bolt lock that does not align with the door frame, so, you need to pinch your bed against the door to sleep with security. Water runs out in the early morning but there is nothing wrong with an old ice cream scoop bucket wash with water, actually feels great. Get out of there, head down to Yaviza for US$20 in taxi and go where the Pan-American highway ends in Panama. Great little town, don't mind the stares. Enjoy...

Bahia Del Sol: Bahia Del Sol a gem in Bocas

We flew into Bocas Del Toro early in the morning, arriving around 9:00am. On arrival to Bahia Del Sol we met the owner, Jack. Immediately Jack made us feel like we were home. He pointed us to a good restaurant in town for breakfast and told us our room would be ready when we returned. Which it was. The house is beautiful, located right on the water with a boat deck on the back, where you can view the most spectacular sunsets on Bocas. Jack's employee "Roberto" was a delight. Roberto a native Indian provide us a insight into the Indian culture of Panama. He would assist in any matter, no matter how small it was. He was also a wealth of information about the island and where the locals went to decompress and eat.

You have the house pretty much to yourself. After breakfast Jack is out and about in town conducting business so you and the guest have the house to yourself. The house is set up in such a way that you end up hanging out with other guest.

Hotel Don Pepe: budget hotel in El Valle

The Hotel Don Pepe has a good central location and is good value at $25 for a spacious double room. The hotel occupies the second and third floors of an attractive Swiss chalet-style building, with a restaurant and handicrafts store below.

The one thing I didn't like was that they kept young Toucans in cages in the back yard and they looked very unhappy. There is a also a Golden Tree Frog in a small fish tank, which didn't look too healthy, so it may be gone when you go there.

Hostal Boquete: friendly hostel in Boquete

Hostal Boquete is a simple hostel, with basic, clean rooms. It is a Swiss chalet style building overlooking the Rio Caldera. What makes it special is the friendliness of the staff including the owner Richard, who hails from Philadelphia. He makes you feel like a family guest. He will cook barbecues for you in the evening to which you can bring your own drink, and there is a real party atmosphere. There is always free fresh coffee brewing in the lobby.

You can relax on the back porch, in a hammock, with a view of the river and mountains.
