Residencial La Mejorana: Best Hotel in Guarare

La Mejorana offers 22 rooms in a modern hotel set back from the highway.
There is an attached restaurant that offers all three meals. (See my seperate tip on that).
The restraurant is good, albeit pricey for this area. But still not expensive by N. American or W. European standards.
The rooms here are OK, they are nothing extraordinary but they are clean and comfy.
If you want to stop and not be in the middle of the densely populated towns of Chitre or Las Tablas, this is an alternative that offers more parking space, is likely to be quieter and offer better privacy, and is not anymore expensive. They are close to all the local events. So this would be a good choice if one is going to see La Mejorana Fiesta in September, Corpus Christi in June or Carnaval in Las Tablas in Feb-Mar.

I haven't stayed here myself but am investigating for others will add to tip as I get more info.
The hotel is close to the beaches at El Puerto. It's about a five minute drive down a good road almost across from the hotel. El Puerto is fairly undeveloped and uncrowded. There are a couple of small restaurants and a bed and breakfast there, but not much else. It is a good place to go and spend a lazy morning on the beach. Restaurante Cachirre lets people bring there own and use the tables there. The have decent local food and offer beer and soda, too. It's just a hundred meters or so to the beach from there.
La Mejorana itself does not offer any views or transit to the beach if you don't have a vehicle a cab to El Puerto is about $2.50 each way.

Casa Del Puerto: Seaside B & B

The Ex-pat owner, Bonnie, claims this place is a hostel, I would define it more as a B & B simply because all the rooms are private, there are no dorm rooms. There are common areas as a hostel would have but it's more homey than a hostel so I'm defining this place as a B & B.
The owner has two houses with three bedrooms in each house she rents, she will rent the one house out in it's entirety to a large family or small group.
All rooms have a double bed. Only one at this time has a gulf view, but the owner plans on doing some remodeling so there will be two rooms that have a gulf view in the future.
Breakfast is served in the house the owner lives in. Both houses have a kitchen but the one doesn't have facilities for eating.
The owner has a phone and internet service if you desire or need to use such.
It is very quiet here, not much in the area. There is a nice little restaurant across the street (Restaurante Cachirre I have a seperate review for it.) that serves typical Panamanian fish dishes (corvina and shrimp, usually) and a few others. It serves beer as well as soft drinks. Bonnie is thinking of making beverages available at Casa Del Puerto for her guests as well, but hasn't stocked up yet.

Casa Del Puerto has a spectacular view of the Gulf of Panama. The six rooms all have a double bed. But only the rooms in the owner's house have private baths, the other house only has one bath at this time, the owner is hoping to remodel the other house in 2010 to include private baths for all those rooms as well. One room in the owner's house has a/c and all have ceiling fans. The houses both have covered porches and the other house has an attached bbq oven.
The owner supplies a continental breakfast of local fruit and bread, juice and coffee each morning.
Casa Del Puerto is just a couple of miles from Guarare. It is about 10 minutes from Las Tablas and 20 from Chitre. It is secluded and quiet, as I described above, one usually only hears the ocean and the breeze in the palm trees.
There are two local restaurants close by, one across the street and another about 100 meters up the road back toward Guarare, both are very good and I recommend them. The best restaurant in the area, La Mejorana, in Guarare, is close to the road one takes to go to Casa Del Puerto and is about 5 minutes from the B & B.
The bus to Chitre is $1.15 and to Las Tablas, 45 cents, from the highway. Taxis to Casa Del Puerto to/from Las Tablas are $5, each way, and $2.50 each way to Guarare.
Casa Del Puerto is a very serene place with a view one will only find at much more expensive accomodations. The price for a room for two, with breakfast is $35 a night. For a place such as this, it is dirt cheap! It is one of the secrets that Guarare has.
