Nice safe hotel for Wife and Daughter?

by oshunluvr

I am seeking hotel recommendations for Panama City and Colon. I am passing through the canal late June/ early July and my wife and daughter will be joining me aboard for the two day passage. However, on each end of the canal, they will need a hotel for a couple of nights. The place should be clean, safe, have A/C and not super pricey. They don't need five stars - just a good two or three!

Hi
I can recommend in Colon, at Shelter Bay Marina, they open a new mini hotel, very nice, clean and you will feel safe there...
In Panama city, they can stay at Granada, very nice, or Executive,

La Estancia B&B is a great place for under $100.US with breakfast included. It is more like a small hotel. It is on Ancon Hill. This is a gated community where the officers lived during the US Canal project. It is beautiful area. A short easy 20 minute walk to the top you can see PC almost 360 degrees. The only drawback is you need to take a taxi 4-8 dollars depending on where you go to get to restaurants and shopping. I highly recommend them! A family place for sure.

If you haven't made a reservation yet, there is a Country Inn Suites on the Canal in Panama City just before the Amador Causeway. There is a TGI Friday's there and has a great view of the Bridge of the Americas. On the website the price for the time you are looking at is $96 for double. It is in a very pretty area and safe, it is mostly commercial around there, govt offices and office buildings, not much residential. It is a safe place and Amador Causeway with it's shops and restaurants is a short drive away.

Travel Tips for Panamá City

Isla Taboga

by a005116

Isla Taboga is a small island just 20km offshore. A ferry will take you from Bolboa to the island in about 1-1,5 hour.
The island is an oase of peace if you compare it to the very buzzy life in Panama city! It's the island to rest out a bit, to swim and relax!

People Watching at the Fish Market

by gdilieto

The Mercado del Marisco (Fish Market), in Santa Ana district, at the intersection of Av. Balboa and Av. Eloy Alfaro, offers another great opportunity for local people watching and for a taste of routine local life (on that regard also see my tip on Avenida Central in the "Things to Do" section).

It is a crowded, lively, colorful market with plenty of stalls selling seafood and ceviche (citrus marinated seafood salad), prepared onsite. I had a very enjoyable experience here and come across many friendly people who nicely let me take photos of them at work.

I visited the Fish Market in the mid-morning hours and I would assume those are the best hours for doing it, though the market opens very early in the morning. There is no much else in the area and most likely those interested shall come here in purpose. Every taxi can take you there.

Romanaccio-Pizzeria-Restaurant

by elsadran

This pizzaria-Restaurant is in the district of Calidonia. It is nothing special but it is fine if you happen to be staying in the neighbourhood, and it has home service, too! The pizzas are tasty and so are the pastas. The menu has a good variety of local and international dishes and the prices are very good. Taste is good, service is slow...
4-7-pizzas cost from 4$ to 10$ ,the big one is gigantic! Mains are 4$ to 7$, desserts 1$ to 4$, and big sandwiches 3,5$ . There is an Internet shop next door .

Casco Antiguo

by ianerin

The historic center of the colonial city is not a huge area, but it is a pleasant one to walk around, enjoy the historic colonial architecture of the city, gain fabulous city and ocean views, and enjoy some good food. One can hurry through the neighborhood in less than an hour, but it is worth more time than that.

Passing Ships - Part 2

by jujub

The ship enters the Canal, aided by these 2 locomotives (the little cars on rails), as you can see in the front, and 2 tug boats in the back. These locomotives were built specifically for the Canal by Mitsubishi, and cost around 2 million dollars -- each.

Each ship entering the Canal must pay a fee, which varies according to their size and type (passenger vs. cargo).

A quick fact: in 1928, Richard Haliburton swam the Canal and paid only 36 cents for the toll fee, according to his measurements and weight.
