safe hotel/sightseeing for a single female

by papayamax10

I will be travelling by myself from the US to Isla Contadora in August, to visit a friend. I would like to stay a day or two in Panama City and visit the city and the canal.

Does anyone know of a hotel in a safe area, not too far from the airport, that would also have sighteeing tours? Ideally, I'd like to take a tour from the hotel, and return to the hotel? I do not speak Spanish, and being by myself, I really do not want to end up in the wrong place.

Thank you for any suggestions!

We stayed in the Balboa Inn last week. It's located in -guess what - Balboa, which is between the Panama Canal entrance and Panama City. It's a very quiet and safe residential area and the staff is very helpful in arranging tours.

It's also 5 minutes by car from the domestic airport where you'll catch your flight to Contadora.

The owners are Dutch and between the two of them they speak 7 languages!

Check out their website at

Maybe you are already in Panama but I stayed in the Balboa Inn with my partner and I think it would be just what you are looking for. Safe, helpful staff to plan tours, easy to get in and out to do tours. See They picked us up at the airport and our flight came in delayed at close to midnight!

You must do the Embera Indian Village trip ( and of course the Canal (Miraflores locks). Then Casco Viejo, Amador... lots of cool places in Panama. Enjoy!

Travel Tips for Panamá City

by bilgeez

Panama runs on fiestas. There seems to be one somewhere every week. They have fiestas for local historical events, religious holidays and to celebrate a town’s patron saint(s). Check the local papers or the tourist guide for events surrounding your stay. The biggest fiesta in Panama is Carnaval, of course. Every town has a celebration beginning the weekend before and leading up to Ash Wednesday. Probably the most lavish of these is in Los Santos province in the town of Las Tablas. See my Las Tablas pages for a description of this event.

TOURIST VISA issued by my airline at airport $ 5

by sfphototraveller

My airline sold me the Panama Tourist Visa here in the US at the airport before flying into Panama.
The Airline announce they were selling the Panama Tourist visa for $5 show your passport and boarding pass and lineup at the gate of your flight.

Its a form you fill out and keep with your passport for Customs to stamp it upon entry with your passpport. its a litter larger than my boarding pass.

Sport Bar with excellent seafood

by vtdanny about Sport Bar Waikiki

Our friends took us to this place called Sport Bat Waikiki, it is a covered roof top bar restaurant in the area near Parque Lefevre about 25 min by car from Cangrejo. Excellent night view on the streets, lots of office type locals go there.

Menu ranges from your typical bar food , nachos, sandwiches , beer in pitchers, to typical local seafood such as grilled fish, filet, shrimps, and seafood soup.
Excellent seafood soup.

You get your usual sport bar ambience , TV's playing various sport games from around the world ; and then they do play salsa, reggaeton music later on in the evening for people that feel like moving and shaking a bit.

If you take a taxi there at night, you won't miss it since you would probably spot the big neon " Waikiki " sign at their sister restaurant right across the street.

A little bit more expensive than a local local restaurant but IMO it's still reasonable.
95 cents for a Bud, 5 USD for 2 pitchers of beer.

Service was good and we felt very safe there even we were the only visible tourists. Seafood soup, large. About 5 USD.

Iglesia de Santo Domingo

by call_me_rhia

The Iglesia de Santo Domingo is now in ruins, and apprently it has been so for quite some time. While the casco antiguo is slowly being repaired (though you can still see many collapsing buildings), it looks like that this church has been forgotten.

Built in 1678, it was destroyed by a fire in 1737, rebuilt and soon after, in 1756, destroyed by yet another fire. Not much is left, but the famous Arco Chato is still there... to remind you how wonderful this church would have been.

Palacio Presidencial or Palacio de las Garzas

by call_me_rhia

The Presidential Palace of Panama is also known as Palacio de las Garzas - heron's palace - because of two grey African herons that are kept in the palace and that you can usually see in the patio outside the palace.

It's a beautiful white construction of moorish influence that is not normally opened to spontaneous visits but you can walk to its gates and take pictures of the entrance and patio fountain.

The street leading to the palace is guarded, but if you look like a tourist you won't even be searched. Actually they are so laid-back and nice that will tell you a few facts about the palace.
