Pollera Headpieces
by bilgeez
Polleras aren't complete unless they have the pearl-laden headpieces displayed here. They are also ornamented with gold. These are very costly and families hand them down from generation-to-generation. Often families rent these headpieces out to augment their income. There are many parades and festivals in Panama, so there are many opportunities to rent these out to the queens and other pollera-wearing women of these local celebrations.
Taxis should not cost a fortune here
by alza
From reading the latest Lonely Planet and from what the hotel managers tell me, taxis to anywhere within Panama City (core area) should be about USD1.50. The US Dollar is used here, at par with the Balboa, no conversion problem whatsoever.
If you go from core to, say, the Causeway, it should be USD5-6.
Same thing from core to the Panama Canal Railway Passenger Station, about 12 kms away.
Hail a cab on the street in front of your hotel, rather than having the hotel call one. The latter takes forever and you'll be watching hundreds of empty cabs speed by while you wait.
I was in the very busy downtown area round 7 pm last night and hailed a cab to get back to my hotel in El Carmen district. It was very safe, the only lil problem was that the cab didn't know how to get on my one-way street and where it was exactly. I had to give him directions to a few landmarks, like the 99 Supermercado close by. I ended up begging him to just leave me at the supermarket and walked home (again, safely... el Carmen is a safe, residential area.)
good value but passed it's prime
by vtdanny about La Casa de las Constillitas
After reading here and at a few other places, I had high hope for La Casa de las Constillitas. It was a bit of a let down when we visited there in March.
Location is good, right in El Cangrejo, with restaurants left and right. The place now is a bit run down. We sat inside the air con section, decor and up keeps definitely show it's age. Menu as reported is big , huge and interesting to read. Overall the place can be more clean compared to other dining places in the area.
Food... portion good for it's price. About $ 6 for the fish, beer cheap. If you don't mind paying a dollar and 2 more, there are other places with better food.I had fried fish and my wife had fried shrimps.... 6/10 Panamanian standard.
Service OK but a bit slow.
BTW La Cascada ,which owns La Casa de las Constillitas , is closed as we were told by an expat in Bella Vista.
Will not return.
Shop on Ave Central

Teaming with people and merchandise, it's fun to go stroll down the pedestrian only part of Av Central and shop with locals. Eat at one of the many cheap, local eateries and lounge in the park Parque Santa Ana
Passing Ships - Final Part
by jujub
And here, the ship has passed the first lock, and will continue its way until it reaches the other side.
You can see the Panamanian flag on the ship -- all ships entering the Canal must have the Panamanian flag on their mast. I can't quite remember what the other flag meant -- i think it meant that a panamanian pilot was handling the ship, and not the captain of the ship? Something like that....
