Hyatt Hacienda del Mar is a beautiful resort.

Hyatt Hacienda del Mar is a beautiful resort. The grounds are beautiful and lush. Most rooms are no more than 15 feet from the beach and the buildings no taller than 2 floors. You can spend every night with your sliding glass doors open and fall asleep to the sound of coqui frogs and the ocean. Dining options at the Dorado were limited. We dined at Su Casa - beautiful location, bit overpriced but great service and food. We also ate at the Hacienda del Mar, again lovely location.. As far as accommodations went, we were upgraded upon arrival to a beachfront upper room (hint - join the Hyatt Gold Club for free upgrades). The room was decorated tastefully in a Spanish hacienda style and the view was amazing. The beach was only 25-30 feet away. Suprisingly, even though we were so close to the beach we were never disturbed by any beach traffic.

If you're looking for a peaceful vacation, the Dorado is the place to go! The grounds are beautiful and lush. Most rooms are no more than 15 feet from the beach and the buildings no taller than 2 floors. You can spend every night with your sliding glass doors open and fall asleep to the sound of coqui frogs and the ocean. We spent the day on the almost always empty beach or laying in one of the many hammocks overlooking the surf. There's also watersports and tours to choose from. At night we would visit one of the restaurants at the Dorado or take the free shuttle over to the Hyatt Cerromar.

Peace and Quiet

We stayed 2 times during one trip in Hyatt Dorado.
You need a car to get there (there is some buss transportation from/to airport, shops, San Juan, however, for the rest you're stuck). You can get very good deals through e.g. hotwire.com, so it shouldn't be a huge expense to have a car. The reason is that Hyatt Dorado not within walking distance from any shop, attraction, facility.
Hyatt Dorado is approx. 45 min (no traffic jams) from San Juan International Airport.

The hotel is very nice and peaceful. The rooms are fine and large enough. All rooms have view towards the sea. The rooms are clean and spacious. We had a standard room. It included a fridge, which came in very handy. Room is cleaned every day. We paid 99 US dollars. Parking is free.

The people at the reception are very helpful and friendly. For the rest, the staff is "invisible" in the positive meaning of the word. You do not notice them, which makes it all very peaceful.

There is no breakfast (! --- therefore the fridge is very handy) served. There is a pool bar, serving lunch. If you like burgers, hot dogs, etc, this is ok. Prices are reasonable. We did it 2-3 times, by lack of anything better. There is a small shop on the premises where you can buy basic necessities, as everywhere, overpriced.

The pool area is large and nice. The beach is a beauty. And the biggest plus of the whole hotel and why we enjoyed it so much: even when it is busy, there are so many lounge chairs available! And lots of space to find a quiet place in the sun or shadow at the wonderful beach. This is so peaceful! Whether you sleep till 9am or 11am, you can be assured that there are plenty of lounge chairs waiting for you. What a difference with several other hotels. Towels provided, 2 for one person is not a problem.

The hotel is about 10 minutes from Dorado, with some fast food options, Wallgreens and a large supermarket. About 30-40 min. from Prime Outlets Barceloneta (recommended!), about 35 min from Plaza Las Americas shopping centre and about 55 min from Old Town San Juan.

All in all, really recommend this place, mainly because it is so peaceful and if you like to enjoy the sun and relax, this is just the place to be (for a very good 99USD deal!)

---> Currently they are either renovating or doing something else with half of the appartment complex (Hyatt Dorado is a time share place) and half of the appartment complex is not open and blocked by a green fence. Some people do not like this "sight", however, I assume you are faced towards the pool or the sea, so...what's the problem :)

Almost like Private Beach

My botfriend and I were choosing between Dorado and Cerromar and ended up choosing Dorado, which was a really good decision. At Hyatt Dorado, we were able to walk out to the beach from our hotel room, have some privacy on the beach. We went to Cerromar and came back right away as there were people everywhere and children running around. If you are going with children, you might want to go to Cerromar as there might be more activities, but Hyattt Dorado is definitely better for R&R.

This is a large multiple facility complex. It is composed of at least three Hyatt hotels, casino, golf club, and a private transportation system to get you to all of them. I wound up here due to a lack of other options...poor me. What a fantastic place.
You walk in the door to a large bird named CoCoa. The staff was excellent and accomodating. The rooms are sperated into blocks so every room is ocean front. The patio is complete with a couple of chairs and a hammock to unwind in.

Either of the HYATT resorts in DORADO, which is about a forty-five minute drive along the coast from San Juan. There is the HYATT HACIENDA DEL MAR RESORT and the HYATT REGENCY CERROMAR BEACH RESORT. The latter is the more luxurious of the two -- it even has a golf course right on the property. We were perfectly happy at the other one, however..... There are several restaurants on the hotel grounds, the beach is beautiful whether by day or by night -- and the mile-long 'river pool' (with water slide) is not to be missed!
Please check with the properties directly for rates and package options. (We stayed there at the travel agent rate... :)...)

We stayed at the Hyatt Dorado...

We stayed at the Hyatt Dorado Beach Resort and because it was the low-season (September) we had a room with an ocean view. That view was just the best you'll get anywhere, I guess... There are several golf courses at both Hyatt resorts in Dorado and the trolley service will bring you to the clubhouses. The River Pool at the Hyatt Regency Cerromar is simply amazing, although I suspect it to be overcrowded during the busy season.

Only negative side to the Resort is the transportation to and from the airport. It is done by a separate operator and that means that it is expensive. $20 per person, and if only two persons want to go at a certain time, you pay $20 extra. For that sum you could rent a car as well...
Check your travel agency. European travel agencies tend to have lower fares during the 'Hurricane season'. Not much chance of actually being hit by a hurricane though, so go ahead. It's luxurious, the bed is huge, rooms are spacious, it's quiet, beautiful beach, marvellous river-swimming pool at the nearby Hyatt Cerromar (free).

We just arrived back from Puerto Rico where we stayed at the Hyatt Hacienda Del Mar Time Share Resort. It is a great place to bring the kids. The rooms are great, spacious and well appointed. The grounds are GEORGEOUS. 2 pools, 1 HUGE swimming pool and a very long Riverpool. Like the lazy river at Disney but better and longer. 3 hottubs.Great beach, but heavy undertoe.

The staff was wonderful. If you want to buy a timeshare ask for Madenline. She is great. The Manager, Ivan is wonderful as well. Very helpful with my parents.

Johnny Rockets was good, but the Beach Bohio was just ok. Don't get the fish sandwich. IT is not a filet!!!! More like a pile of bread with fish sause mixed in. It is also very expensive. 10.00 for a hamburger.


If you like small casinos, you will like the one here. Very small, nickel, quarter, dollar and five dollar slots. a small amount of tables. Free drinks if you are playing. Bring 20 dollars, get nickles and play for a couple of hours. Lots of fun.

Rent a car, watch the driving, bur rent the car. You will save money in the long run because of the high cost of transportation. Buy groceries at the local Amigo's supermarket. Left out of Hyatt and right at first major interchange. It will be just down on your Right.

There are a number of fast food places. We went to Wendy's and no one spoke English. It was frustrating for both the staff and us.

The food is very expensive if you are travelling on a budget. Eat out once or twice and eat in most of the time.

Eat at Rancho Mar. Very casual, outside dinning. The food is WONDERFULL. Stuff for kids and adults. My mom had a whole fried Red Snapper. It was Georgeous.

Other recommended places are La Terazza (20 to 25 dollars per person, even kids) and Ala Brasa (20 to 25 dollars per person).

Old San Juan is a must. Drive to Catano and take the Aqua shuttle. This will cost you more than 25 dollars per person if you don't have a car. The Ferry is 50 cents per person. Free for kids under 16. 25 cents if you are between 65 and 74 and free if you are 75 or older.

Have fun and check out the Hyatt. We had a great time. My boys are 12 and 9 and they are still pruned from being in the water so much. A great place for a family vacation!!!!

fire red ants

I am allergic to fire red ants, are they a problem in puerto rico, if so where should I not go.

We have fire ants here, but I have never seen Red ones- only black. They make very noticeable earthen mounds or live in rotten trees.
I never noticed ant hills in the National Forest or the Botanical gardens, but I assume they must be there. Don't go off the beaten track and look out for the mounds and you should be ok. The ants at the beach don't bite- they are just looking for crumbs!

Yes, you must avoid hyatt Hacienda del mar, in Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico. I got bit by some of them and am still having allergic reactions. I am taking benadryl until I can get to see my doctor. I am back in NJ thank God. Please be very careful.

i got bitten by one out in the countryside--you feel it, but it's like a mosquito bite--itchy for a few hours. i was standing in the dirt and didn't notice their tiny anthill until they were all over my sandals. nothing compared to the texas fire ant that bit me a couple summers ago--YOWCH!! texas fire ants much worse! and BTW, the PR ant was red....
