Travel Tips for Ponce
Do stop in at the Ponce Tourism Office
by VdV
For you Lonely Planet readers, under the Ponce section, it recommends that you visit Judith Pacheco Santos at the Ponce Tourism Office. I don't know if Judith is the woman we spoke to, but the woman we spoke to was extremely helpful and nice. She also gave us a great tip for lunch (see Restaurant Tips.) They have a simple map of the downtown area, and lots of brochures, not just of Ponce, but all over Puerto Rico, many of which highlight areas not found in other guidebooks. Lonely Planet lists the Ponce Tourism Office address as on the 2nd floor above Citibank facing Plaza Delicias, with a phone number of (787) 841-8044. I don't recall if this is exactly where we went in, but I do remember it being near a bank office and walking up a few steps (but not having to go up to a 2nd floor.) Gosh, maybe we weren't in the "official" tourism office come to think of it! But the woman was helpful nonetheless!
The place we went to is also right off the Plaza, so you should have no trouble finding it. The phone number is (787) 284-4913.

See the Catedral Nt. Sra. de...

See the Catedral Nt. Sra. de la Guadalupe at Plaza Degetau right in the middle of the historic district downtown. The cathedral is surrounded by several fountains and statues and is the focal point of the old town. Inside, the cathedral is very colorful and in very good shape.
Avoid rush hour traffic if possible
by virtualpatrick
With the major roadways into and out of San Juan or any other major cities in Puerto Rico, try to avoid rush hour traffic. It's basically a semi-standstill situation. To avoid traffic within the major cities, travel the major roads between 10:00a - 3:00p, evening, or early morning hours.
Travelling the 20 or so miles from Humacao to Cagua enroute to San Juan along Route 30 took 45 minutes.
In the picture, note that the shoulders of the road is used by the locals as a driving lane when in traffic. Also notice the pickup truck delivering plantains, yum.

Spanish is widely spoken. Most people know some basic english. If spanish is not your strong suit it would be best to have a person fluent in spanish. Resort & other vacation places have english speaking people available.
