Hotel Melia: Great Hotel with lots of History and Culture

by theonefisher

We stayed for one night in the city of Ponce. Ponce is full of history and great architecture. This hotel features and open courtyard between the lower floors and clean rooms. The price was very reasonable. There is a free breakfast on the roof that offers a great view of the town. There is a statue garden on the roof as well. The staff was extra friendly and eager to help.

If you haven't seen Ponce, you won't want to miss it!

The El San Juan: Nice way to stay

by plasma800

The El San Juan is pure magic. This hotel has done everything right. First and foremost this is more like a resort than hotel. It's not just beds and room but they have the most magnificent lobby and casino that completely fill up with locals and tourists alike starting on the Thursday night, getting bigger on Friday night and totally full Saturday night.

This lobby though is first class and its not a frat party either. they have two bars, a casino and a full night club for those who want a little more party. It's elegant and everyone is spectacular. no t shirts, no shorts, no flip flops (during the day, beach attire is fine, but on weekends a no no directly in the lobby).. on the weekends in the lobby the hotel is transformed!

On the other side of the hotel .. is just amazing. Out the back door and there is a large outdoor bar connected to the restaurant and the one lavish pool after another after another all the way to the direct beach access.

The back of the hotel drops you right off at the start of Isla Verde beach, one of hte most talked about beaches in Puerto Rico and certainly San Juan. Its kid friendly (i don't have any kids but..) security was everywhere, cops everywhere and all of the water was roped so no one can float off.

The rooms are a bit odd, just not what you are used to seeing and if anyone in the next room even coughs loud, you hear it. Lord forbid you get a room near the elevator deck.. but who's sleeping anyway!

Downstairs they have a whole shopping arrangement where you can get just almost anything you need.
within walking distance is a walgreens, a cock fighting ring and some really good food. Right next door to the cock fighting (walk out hotel front, turn left on ave isla verde, cross street, two blocks down on right) is the best food i had almost anywhere (except for Fajardo Bay)

Isla Verde Blvd is busy and bustly, just walk. Just get out and turn right or left and walk. You will find all kinds of things. Food, Cabs, Cigar store, Cock Fighting just everything.

The hotel is amazing. Anything you want, period, you got it in five minutes. Even a doctor, which we needed, he was there within 20 minutes in rush hour friday!

As long as you do not plan to spend all of your time in your hotel room, everything about this place is magic. This is not a cheap hotel, this is a 5 star resort so take some decent clothes and enjoy!

Ask for a taxi driver named Michael. He specializes in driving to places on the island OTHER than the air port. A tour guide taxi if you will. He's drive you anywhere on the island you want to go, even overnight and guides along the away, and for not a lot of money.

Oh certainly the magical lobby, casino, beach access and location.

Sue and Bob: Charming Cabin

by welbourn3

We stayed in a little "cabin" just outside El Yunque Park. It was wonderful and inexpensive. Sue and Bob are the owners and they were extremely nice. My husband and I slept in the loft (with a few friendly lizards watching us from the walls and coquis singing us to sleep) and our kids slept downstairs. There were comfortable hammocks on the balcony as well, where one was up in the banana trees. For more info. try www.elyunque.com/sues.html

Casa de Amistad: In the Heart of Real Vieques

by paralee

Great place and I wish we had had more time to stay there. There is a great hammock on the front porch and a nice little pool with several small tables in the back. Great rooms for good prices. All kinds of snorkel equipment, beach towels, coolers, and chairs available for guest use as well as water and beer sale in the community fridge, all on the honor system.

Located in Isabel II (which is pronounced "segundo" not "dos") so you are in the "real" part of Vieques where all the island people actually live. There is a post office, a grocery store, and not to mention, it's right by the ferry, so if you have to catch that 6:00 am ferry like we did, you can just walk. Unfortunately, this also means that you have to get a público to Esperanza where all the nice beaches, bio bay, and beachy restaurants are located. But we would definitely stay there again. It was wonderful.

Passion Fruit Bed and Breakfast: Fajardo's Jewel

by paralee

Beautiful place, very secure, incredible breakfast! We were only in Fajardo for the evening and had to leave right after breakfast the next day, but the pool looked fabulous and there were all kinds of neat games, books, and magazines available if it happened to be a rainy day. Very close to both 7 Seas Beach and Las Croabas, but not walking distance. The room was spacious and very clean as well as the bathroom. The bed was a bit thin and hard, but after a day in El Yunque and an afternoon at the beach, we were too tired to care.

Breakfast was amazing. Oatmeal and fresh fruit for starters and banana pancakes and bacon for the main course. Fresh coffee and orange juice all outside by the pool and gardens. What a spectacular way to start the day. Everyone was extremely friendly and the staff made it a point to learn our names and really get to know us.

Sheraton Old San Juan: Quite a Luxurious Spot in Old San Juan

by paralee

The Sheraton in Old San Juan is a beautiful hotel on the bay in Old San Juan. Many rooms look over the water to the docks where the cruise ships come in. The rooftop pool is possibly the most beautiful place I've ever spent an afternoon reading a book. We lost a little bit of money in the casino, but it was fun to play the slots for a while. It was a bit pricey, but we were lucky and got a really good deal through a friend, so it was a nice change from the cheaper places we usually stay.

Amazing roof-top pool, beautiful rooms, great service, casino for those interested (we also got a $5 credit for the casino upon check-in).

La Concha Resort: Perfect Oceanfront Hotel

by patrickfoster18

La Concha is an absolutely beautiful beach front hotel in the community of Condado just east of San Jaun. Every room has spectacular, head-on ocean views and the facilities, including two pools, two hot tubs and a posh pool deck, are very modern. But the most important amenity is the gorgeous beach that is the hotel's backyard. While all beaches in Puerto Rico are public, the beach at La Concha is about as private as it gets. The hotel also provides beach chairs and umbrellas free of charge.

Another plus about the hotel was the surrounding neighborhood. A lot of oceanfront hotels in the Caribbean are in secluded areas but this one has plenty of shops and restaurants within a block or two ranging from Wendy's to Gucci. If you are looking for Puerto Rican food, nearby Latin Star is hard to beat. If you are looking for non-Puerto Rican food Mike and Charlies, which serves Italian, is a cheap and delicious stop worth making.

While it is easy enough to take a cab into Old San Juan (which takes about 15 minutes and cost around $15) there is also a free public bus that departs from the bus stop just to the west of the hotels main entrance. There are two buses that go to Old San Juan from this stop, the B21 and the C53 and it takes about 25 minutes. The cab from the airport was $20 and took about 15 minutes.

The only odd thing about La Concha is that the lobby becomes a very trendy nightclub in the evenings that just oozes hip. This is great if you don't want to go far for nightlife, but the blaring music can be startling as you make your way to your room. Another minor drawback was the hotel casino that was being constructed adjacent to the hotel. The project was supposed to be finished in Fall 2008 but its looks more like Spring 2009. While I'm sure the casino will be great when it is done for now it is just a noisy eyesore.

Overall, I can't imagine a better place to stay in Puerto Rico. For more info about our trip to Puerto Rico visit our travel blog at http://patrinadoestheglobe.blogspot.com/

CLARIAN LE CONSULATE: CUTE BOUTIQUE HOTEL

by mckinney906

We really enjoyed our stay at Le Consulate. It was a nice hotel for the price ($128.00 including taxes and a huge balcony) The people were very nice here. We did have to tell one of the younger workers (in her 20's) one night that we were going to go to sleep because she was really loud and it was echoing down the hallway on the first floor but she said sorry and stopped. They are very accomidating and gave lots of tips. Everything is within walking distance. The beach is literally a 2 minute walk and walgreens is right around the corner as are some other cute little shops.

free 1 item and drink at pelayo resteraunt about a 2 minutes away for breakfast you get a little ticket and take it there. Also their pool was nice it had waterfalls and was very private. The balcony on the room was HUGE!

Gables Breeze: Dorado Townhomes

by kgi

We stayed at 30 Palmetto Ct. in Dorado, PR a Gables Breeze Townhome rental. The Townhome upon arrival was completely filthy, we had to go by cleaning supplies and clean the mold out of the refrigerator. There was no air conditioning on the first floor at all. THe items that were said to be available to us for use were not. Oh-there was a grill but it was so rusted and old and dirty we did not dare touch it. The pillows were stained and old as well as the bed linens. The "sparkling" swimming pool was green. The list goes on including a barking dog next door who was out 24/7 and walking around in his own waste that smelled so bad we had to close the windows. We ended up leaving after a couple of days and the homeowner would not return any of our money. We were completely ripped off. Beware of this area.

El Canario By The Lagoon: Nice little hotel

by shargurl

This was a nice little hotel. We stayed one night before our cruise. The elevator is a little small, but no worries. Our room had it's own balcony, the views weren't of the ocean, but it accomodated us. The air conditioning was great, our room was nice and cold when we got there. The bathroom is a little on the small side, but everything worked fine.

The decor and quaintness of the hotel was nice. This was my first time staying in a place that wasn't in the USA, so I have nothing to compare it to. It served its purpose and the staff was friendly enough.

The hotel was in a very convenient location, walking distance to the beach, lagoon and restaurants.

Those staying here pre or post cruise can travel by taxi to the pier for $12, plus $1 per bag.
