 | San Juan Reviews | Tips 61 - 70 of 90 | | Most people don't think to rent out a condo instead of the conventional hotel/inn/bed&bath, since well, its not conventional- lol. However, as un-common as renting out condos for short stays may sound, it turned out a lot of the condos were all booked up since we booked everything at the last minute, and on top of that, it was a long weekend, maybe IT IS more conventional. Luckily, after extensive research, and refusing to give up on finding cheap airfare and accomodations at the last minute, I was able to find one last studio condo in Condado in the San Juan area (right in the middle of Isla Verde, where the International Airport is, and Old San Juan, the other point of the San Juan region). |
Considered one of the best examples of Art Deco architecture in San Juan, the Normandie Hotel has spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel is decorated in a calming color palette with accents of ocean blue, reflecting the view beyond. Rooms are large and also well decorated and guests can relax in the sun room, swim in the outdoor pool, work out in the fitness center and pamper themselves with a treatment in the Ocean View Spa. Cru, the on-site Italian restaurant, features fusion cuisine of seafood and Italian classics. The Atrium Coffee Bar serves light meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner and N-Lounge serves a wide selection of appetizers and refreshing beverages in a very trendy atmosphere. With reasonable prices and a great atmosphere, this hotel comes highly reccomended for those spending a couple nights in San Juan. The hotel is also walking distance to Old San Juan.
The N-Lounge is very cool - overlooking the ocean |

We checked in on a Thursday after traveling all day. We were tired and looking forward to a relaxing evening and getting some sleep. We were surprised to find out that the hotel was hosting a party in the atrium right ouside our door. They played disco and club music so loud the walls shook. We could not hear our tv or even talk to eachother let alone get any sleep. When I went to complain at the front desk they offered me ear plugs. When I asked how they could be so inconsiderate of their guests the manager just kept saying "I understand". The party lasted till 1:00 in the morning and the music only got louder and louder as the night went on.
The hotel is old and quirky. The room layout wastes a lot of space and our view was of the parking lot. The pool is okay but I expected much more for the money we spent. This hotel has a lot of unfinished details that make it an uncomfortable stay. We heard loud banging sounds (pipes?) at random times throughout the day and night. Our friends stayed in 2 other rooms: one room smelled like sewage. None of the rooms had all the details (e.g., paint, bathroom renovation, mirrors) complete. Continental breakfast was poor and exorbitantly priced. Concierge service was terrible: we never received the welcome package for the wedding we attended until we asked everyone at the hotel about it for 2 days. There were loud dance parties every night until midnight - 1pm. Front desk staff appeared not to care about their customers and sometimes were altogether absent. The only good thing about this hotel was the cleaning staff: they did an excellent job. I rented a villa on this property on http://www.vacationrentals.com/vacation-rentals/26139.html and it was exquisite! There is the actual hotel and the villas that share the same property as the hotel. There are seven clusters of villas on the same property as the hotel and I rented in Cluster 2. Security is VERY tight. This place had better security than the airport. I would advise renting a car for sure because the area is so remote from San Juan. At the 3 leaving the hotel, if you make a left and drive for 10 miles, you will find Walmart and lots of restaurants in Fajardo. 3miles in that same direction is a nice clean coin operated laundromat directly across from the Esso gas station and Amigo grocery store. The two high rises are your landmark. That is actually Luquillo. This is also the area where Eco Tours and other agencies meet at the marinas for snorkeling trips, fishing, etc. The staff is wonderful at the hotel. There is direct beach access from the Beach Club before you get to the hotel. Right now there is construction in that area and the workers park there but thats the area to get to the beach. There is a pool and the pool bar then a pathway down to the private beach area.
I spent 2 weeks here and this place had everything. The business center is only open until 5pm if you need to fax or make copies. One word of advice. The hotel has free wifi access directly in front of the front desk. So ensure your laptop is configured before you come. Mine was not and I paid the $10 for 1 hour in the business center because it was imperative that I get to a computer. I also went to an internet cafe in Isla Verde which is 30miles away from the resort until I got my laptop configured for the wifi. (turns out, my radio was turned off). But the amenity is there in an emergency. You can receive faxes there as well. There is a very lavish spa and gym on the 2nd floor, the ATC (ATM) is on the main floor, there is a great bar on the main floor and Ded the bartender is very good and nice! Check out the views in my pictures attached. This was absolutely exquisite. It can be inconvenient however if you need to conduct business in San Juan. It is 25-30 miles away and there is a 1.50 toll each way. The Esso gas station was my favorite because they take credit card at the machine outside like in the states. Not all gas stations in PR do that. There is a toll of 1.50. The hotel has a shuttle for $60 round trip if you are staying at the hotel that I HIGHLY recommend. Taxis charge at least $80 one way with good reason.Website: http://www.wyndhamriomar.com/ Other Contact: http://www.riomarvacation.com/ |
