    A Two-star Guesthouse with a Great Setting

    by

I stayed one night at HosterĂa del Mar in a "Standard" Room and also saw another room in the same category. For the quality of accomodation I experienced, the Hotel - properly a Guesthouse - would not be worth staying if it wasn't for the setting and the beachfront location.

My Standard Room - see photos posted - was barely decent, somewhat rundown and old. The bathroom had issues as well with water in the shower taking long time to get barely warm and the toilet flush working poorly. All in all, the Hotel sets itself at the bottom-end of the midrange accomodation, and if you are not open up to live with some discomfort, you can start looking at some place else right away.

The reason why you may want to stay here is the setting: literally right on the beach in one of the prettiest areas of Ocean Park, where the high-rise condos leave way to more quite and cozy residential communities. If a cozy place at the beach is what you are after, this Hotel may be worth considering. There is a beautiful patio right on the beach where meals are served or where you can just relax during the day. The restaurant, serving "International Creative Cuisine", (that's how they say on their website), is good in quality but pricey, and it is a kind of funny after your dinner to move from a four-star restaurant to a two-star motel-like room.

Service at the Hotel is generally poor and you shall not have any expectations in term of efficiency. The Continental breakfast included in the rate is also poor and any integration comes at extra price.

Getting to the Hotel is not straightforward since it is hosted inside a gated community whose entrance is few blocks away the address street. If you are driving it may take you a while to figure out how to get there (entrance through Calle Santa Ana, take note) and, in my case, the front desk that I phoned was not much helpful in giving me directions.

All in all, per my experience, this Hotel will please those ones looking for a cozy place at a beachfront location not much demanding about the quality of accomodation. If you are after a nice room or an attentive service, you shall look somewhere else.

Unique Quality: The beachfront location in a quite and cozy neighborhood.

FUSION ON THE BEACH

by moiraistyx about UVVA'S

One of the yummiest places we stopped at was Uvva's. It's a great eclectic/fushion restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant itself is located inside of El Hosteria Del Mar, one of the many guest houses you'll find along the beach. Uvva's serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and is open from 8 AM till 10 PM seven days a week. My favorite part about dining at Uvva's was the atmospher. It was very quiet and relaxed. The sounds of the ocean and the light ocean breeze made the evening great. I also got some great pics of the sun set from our table. I decided to order 3 appetizers as opposed to one main dish that way I could sample a variety of foods. The first thing I got was fried yucca chips with nut crusted goat chesse. It was absolutely delicious. The other item I got was fritters made from rice flour and served up with a blueberry compote. Finally a different kind of fritter served with a mango relish. All three were yummy, yummy, yummy.

Where to stay???

by dgunnare

We will be staying in San Juan Nov 24-26th as a precruise stay. We will be traveling with our 13yr. old daughter as well 2 of our best friends. We really want to absorb the culture and everything San Juan has to offer, as well as find a nice place to stay. I am open to b&b as well as resorts. I have looked at the following, and everywhere there is a a negative review mixed with a positive,so how do you ever really know? Has anyone stayed at El Conario by the Sea? Or Embassy Suites Del Dorado Beach Club? Any other sugesstions? I would prefer not to stay at a casino resort, especially with the additional taxes charged that Ihave read about. Please any help would be so appreciated it.

We stayed at the El Convento in Old San Juan and loved it. There is a lot to see within a short walking distance. You can walk to two Forts in a short time and to the ferry for a quick trip across the bay.

El Convento is very nice and charming, but it is very expensive.

Dorado is expensive as well, though the facilities are great, and it is really no different than staying at the Ritz, Intercontinental or Wyndham El San Juan...all located on the beach. The bad thing about Dorado is that you need a car or taxi to get back into the main area of San Juan.

I have lived here for 2 years, and I have had some friends stay at El Canario by the Sea. The rooms were fine, and it was right by the beach. It is also just a few doors down from the busy Ashford Avenue with lots of restaurants.

I have had many colleagues and friends stay At Wind Chimes Inn, and they loved it. They have a website, though I am not sure what it is. You might check it out.

Numero Uno Guesthouse and Hosteria del Mar are great locations right on the beach in Ocean Park.

I actually checked out Hotel Milano in Old San Juan for some friends. The rooms were very clean, it is also in the heart of Old Town, and it wasn't that expensive.

Hope that helps!
