Intercontinental san Juan - Average to below

Overpriced. Outdoor restaurant poor. Beach in all of San Juan area is dirty. Furniture in lobby is old, stained and worn out, same for bedspreads in room. I had 2 rooms. Hotel desk in painfully slow as well This is not the hotel to stay at to enjoy a Caribbean vacation, but then again San Juan is not either. Don't stay here, it's a waste of $.
Definitely not up to normal Intercontinental standards. The whole area is a dump.
A Decent Resort
by Schasm about Hotel Intercontinental - San Juan
Hotel is near airport in Isla Verde. It has a beautiful pool complete with Waterfall, bridge and whirlpool. 6 restaurants and several (4?) bars on site. Even a Casino.
We chose this Hotel which was part of an airfare package through cheaptickets.com. Since it averaged less than $50/night with the package, this hotel was by FAR a great deal! The beach at Isla Verde is beautiful. The hotel also has an awesome workout facility! (Much better than any other hotel I've been to).
Only downfall is the restaurants and bars are too expensive! (Even more than we expected). And Isla Verde offers little more that other resorts/hotels.
Would go back in a heartbeat!

Wow! I just logged on to write a glowing review of the InterContinental after our 4 night stay there at the beginning of January, and was shocked to read the reviews from the New Yorkers below! Are they sure they stayed at this hotel? Our experience was completely different. We got a great last minute deal on Travelocity two days before our departure ($680/pp, airfare + hotel!) as we were desperately in need of sun & relaxation (not to mention a quick escape from this brutal Boston winter!) We found it, and so much more, at the InterContinental. I was very reluctant to go to San Juan, as our impressions from a quick cruise stop-over years ago were that it was a dirty and crime-ridden island. Boy am I glad we gave it another shot. SJ is not the type of place where you're going to poke around the village and have dinner in town. But if you want amazing weather, a beautiful hotel, and so good ol' fashioned R&R, you found the place. We couldn't have been happier with the IC: a fantastic room (totally spotless, btw), great service, a tranquil and beautiful pool, and one of the best beaches I've ever seen. The sand is like baby powder, and unlike other islands in the Carribean, you're totally undisturbed and encouraged to relax. The restaurants at the IC are great. My husband loved Ruth's Chris and we had an amazing meal at the Italian resto on the lower level. The other nights we went to the Wyndham El San Juan for dinner (they have a great Mexican resto overlooking the ocean) and the Ritz Carlton. We thought the IC was FAR nicer than the El San Juan, and while the Ritz is nice, you pay for it -- and their pool chairs are identical to those at the IC! Their casino was great -- and kept hubby occupied while I read by the pool or napped in our room. Not sure what this NYC reviewer means about the hotel being overrun with New Yorkers. Only days earlier we had moved from Manhattan to Boston, and both found it to be quiet and very laid-back. You could always get a great lounge chair at the pool or a seat in the hot tub. The best part of our trip was breakfasts at the buffet (fresh fruit, omlets & waffles to order, friendly service) and lunch by the pool (salads, sandwiches, great lemonade) brought right to your lounge chair. I'd say we're pretty finicky travellers, and not easily satisfied, but we absolutely loved the IC and thought it earned every one of it's 4 stars. If you can get a great deal online like we did -- GO. We spent our honeymoon at the Four Seasons in Maui and agreed that this little trip was equally relaxing, tropical and enjoyable. I can't say enough good things about this place. My parents just booked a 4-day trip to the IC based on our recommendation. You won't be dissapointed in this place. ENJOY!
Great time.

My boyfriend and I just came back from a nice trip to San Juan for Valentine's weekend. We both loved it. The Intercontinental was clean, modern, and the staff were very friendly. The hotel food was a bit expensive, but just across the street there is a little shopping center with a grocery store, diner, mexican restaurant, bakery, and baskin robbins, so you don't have to pay the hotel prices the whole trip. The Italian restaurant in the hotel was excellent. The casino is small, but nice for some entertainment. On Sunday afternoons they have a free show of Puerto Rican music and dancing at the pool that I loved. It's a good place to stay if you want a gorgeous pool, easy access to the beach, but a quieter nightlife. You can walk next door to the Wyndam for more nightlife--a dance club, casino, and an amazing lobby with bars and live music. Enjoy!
