This place was listed on the tourist map of St Kitts I had on my weekend visit. Quite useful as I had hired a car and blindly went searching for my friend who was staying in St Kitts (but didn't know where). After a fruitless drive in some area called Mattingly Heights, I called up the Bird Rock Hotel.

The stay was quite pleasant.. it was for one night, had a fairly nice view from the room, and that night had a special buffet with plenty of delicious caribbean dishes.. I can't remember the reason for the event (was in April 2006), but they also had a steel band trio to serenade while you ate. Room was air conditioned with ensuite bathroom and a large kingsize bed plus remote controlled tv. It was a quiet night for me as the stay was unplanned, but I'm sure had you stayed there for a week you could have explored the beach bar down some steps near the hotel. Name of which I've forgotten, but it had a lovely secluded bay. Pink buildings!

British Heritage

St. Kitts was ruled by Great Britain for more than 200 years, and visitors to the island will see many reminders of that heritage in the architecture, place names, and more, including this telephone booth at Independence Square, and others like it elsewhere in the city, such as at The Circus. In these photos Karen is actually using her Cincinnati Bell cell phone, and was able to call her daughters back in Ohio and New York, without charge.

English is the official language, and many locals speak it with a British accent.

Street Musicians

I always enjoy hearing street musicians and was delighted that these fellows were performing near the Pelican Mall on the day of our visit to Basseterre, St. Kitts. They were not the most talented group I ever heard, but they looked good in their matching bright green shirts. I dropped a little something in their tip box as my way of encouraging the performing arts.

"The circus"

The town center is called the circus. It has a roundabout with a 4 sided clock. The circus was built after the 1867 fire. Taxis, souvenir shops, and vendors are all clustered near the roundabout. Traffic is very congested here.

"Basseterre"

Basseterre is the capital of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. Located in the Leeward Islands the nation consists of the islands of St. Kitts (Saint Christopher), Nevis and Sombrero.

Charlestown, located in Nevis, was the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton.

The two larger islands are volcanic in origin and very mounta;inous. They are separated by a narrow strait. the majority of the population are descendants of slaves.

Columbus visited the islands in 1493, but there were no settlements until the British arrived in 1623. The French arrived two years later.

In 1983 the islands gained full independence.
