Fortuna Beach Resort by deecat In the early 1990's the Fortuna Beach Resort opened, and that is when we visited. Since that time, it has been purchased by Wyndham Hotels and is now called Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach. Viva Wyndham Resorts is an all-inclusive chain of hotels, and the Fortuna Beach is one, which means everything is included in your stay. You enjoy accommodations, full breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks; unlimited beverages, cocktails and wine, daily activities, fitness programs; unlimited non-motorized water sports with complimentary lessons; live nightly entertainments; all taxes, surcharges, and gratuities. If you choose to use motorized water sports, then you rent. There are about 270 rooms spread throughout several colonial-style buildings, including non-smoking facilities. The rooms have either a garden or an ocean view. There are two eating facilities: The Junkanoo which offers an international cuisine buffet style (Casual to semi-formal attire) and La Trattoria which offers Italian cuisine (dinner only) and is a la carte and gourmet with semi-formal attire. There are also three bars at the resort.
Many activities were offered when we stayed there. The staff was international and served as activity assistants, entertainment, and guides. Each night, the staff would put on a brand new show or play. It was quite remarkable. The resort sits on a private stretch of white-sand beach that faces the beautiful turquoise waters. Activities of all kinds were available (both indoor and outdoor activities.) Snacks are served from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. and from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. We really enjoyed our stay at the Fortuna Beach Resort, and I hope the new ownership does not alter the warm, welcoming atmosphere that we experienced those many years ago. The Reef Hotel is on Paradise Island right on the beach. it's a high rise Hotel, so if you don't like heights this is not the place for you. The service was good if a bit slow (they're all on Island Time) the rooms are nice and most have a balcony for relaxing on. Rooms were fairly large and well appointed. They were fairly clean. Nice restaurant downstairs, or room service was available. You could also go out to a little thatched roof bungalow on the beach and get service out there. The Hotel will arrange deep sea diving, snorkeling, boat rides, fishing trips or just boat sightseeing trips. We opted for snorkeling and boat tours.

the view from the cigar bar by Exiled_Angel This resort was lovely, although it should be noted that it was very artificial, very man-made and hence very touristy. Don't expect to see any of the 'real' Bahamas on Grand Bahama Island because from what we could see, there wasn't any. Outside of the resorts were simply run-down little houses with rusty cars on bricks and a plethora of Freemason's Halls plus lots of palm forests. The resort itself was fabulous, 2/3 pools beach side stretching far down the beach (you can walk well beyond though for miles), 3 different parts of the hotel (lighthouse/weston breakers cay/sheraton), loads of facilities, and lots of wonderful restaurants, bars and a couple of discos. Our favourites were Barracudas (breakfast), Iries (caribbean), Churchill's Chop House (treat yourself! it's worth it!), and hammerheads beach bar (daytime food). The cocktails are a bit of a killer, the alcohol content is very strong so be careful! Generally a lovely place to relax though there isn't really anything cultural to see so it's best just for sun-worshippers - be careful though! the breeze coming in from the sea means you barely break a sweat even though the sun is cooking you! Wear factor 25 at least!
The food was excellent, we ate very well on a stay away, in fact I'm just dribbling remembering it all! Iries and Churchill's Chop House were especially lovely. inside the older 2 bedroom villa by slabeaume Definately the accommodations at Paradise Cove! There are only a few: an older 2 bedroom villa; 2 brand new 2 bedroom villas; and a condo---with the proprietors living above it. THis is a picture inside the older villa. I chose this place because of the price. It was cheap in comparison to just about everywhere else on Grand Bahamas. With hotels, there's an added tax---PER PERSON! With the other condos and villas I checked out, there were taxes per person and a cleaning fee of about $75. This place had neither. It was $105/night for the 2 bedroom older villa and the proprietors couldn't have been nicer. We even got a discount on the snorkel equipment. The accommodations have a full kitchen and bath, with AC, TV, and VCR. The TV reception wasn't very good when we were there, but they offered free video for viewing and we took advantage of that. There wasn't a washer and dryer in the older villa, but we were allowed to use the one for the resort. No pool, but who needs it, you're right on the beach! No workout facilities, but you can swim all you want in the ocean. It's also the only place on Grand Bahama that you can snorkel right from the beach and see lots of coral and tropical fish. During the day, the resort opens up for paying beach visitors. During that time, an outdoor bar (the Red BAr) also opens with lots of good bar b qed sandwishes and refreshing drinks. During the evenings, the place becomes a secluded beach for the resort renters. We stayed at a cheaper location not on the water. While this saved us some money we found out that due to problems and poverty, they charged a fee per the amount of electricity that was used during your stay. So the air conditioner (which is necessary in the summer months) had to go off at night. Just an FYI. Theme: Other

@ the Island Palms by fmaven We stayed at the Island Palms Resort as part of a deal with the Discovery Sun cruise. They have it down to a science. When you arrive at the port, there's a designated section to catch a cab to your respective accommodation. The Island Palms was a very basic, almost motel-like hotel. The rooms were clean and no-frills. It is OK if you're not the picky type or won't be spending a lot of time in it. It is NOT on a beach, but there is a shuttle to its sister resort Island Seas and you can use the facilites and beach there. Watch out for the "breakfast invitation", which is really a timeshare presentation. You can get your room taxes back if you go, but it is a pressured, uncomfortable hard-sell.
It is Downtown and very close to a bus stop. You can rent scooters there and there is an activities coordinator for signing up for tours and excursions.

Sugar Mill Pool at Sheraton by angelarm I would definitely stay here again. We were able to buy 3 nights and get a 4th one free. However, we wanted to stay 5 nights. If we asked for a 5 day reservation we'd pay full price for each night. To remedy this, I bought the 4 nights through Sheraton and the 5th night through Travelocity. No problem, we let them know at checkin and were able to stay in the same room. They just had us check out on the 4th day & check back in, a formality. The rooms are not large, since it was converted from another resort. Bathrooms are tight, one person at a time, please! Alcoholic drinks at the poolside are $8 each. If there was a Happy Hour we weren't aware of it or weren't around. We felt relatively safe on the resort grounds but they are not private so be aware. One time my mom and I were walking between Westin and Sheraton and two young men were walking towards us & nearly bumped into us--we had to maneuver around them. It did seem a little intimidating, but they didn't rob us. There is a casino on site open only to island visitors. We both lost a bit of cash there! The restaurants were alright, but the breakfast brunches at Barracuda's and Willie Broadleaf's were overpriced ($18/person plus 15% gratuity) and the some of the food seemed, well, reheated. Nothing special. China Grill (pan-Asian) and Portobello's (Italian cuisine) are better options, good ambience, mood lighting, and discreet service. Since we spent quite a bit of money on food (made the mistake of adding another 15-20% or more on the standard 15% tip at the Prop Club--gratuity is usually already on your bill) there were times when we were glad for a simple Subway or convenience store snack. We liked Zorba's Greek Restaurant at Port Lucaya Marketplace for a casual, cheap lunch of gyros and Greek salad. Overall the island itself seemed a little light on the attractions we were looking for, not as well-maintained as we were hoping, but we went for a relaxing getaway and that's what we found, and were more than satisfied with Our Lucaya Resort.
As a guest of the Sheraton, you may use the facilities at the Westin next door and Pelican Bay across the street (and vice versa). There is a large fitness center at the spa at the far end of the Westin. Bit of a walk, but if you are concerned about fitness, not an issue. The whole resort has several pools and never felt crowded during our stay. Front desk service was fantastic, not rushed, and attentive. There was no mini-fridge in our room when we arrived so when we called about it, they apologized and sent one up promptly, then offered to take $25 off our bill for the inconvenience.
