We found the house on vacationrentals.com and booked a 10 day stay for December 2008 in early February. The owner doesn’t accept any credit cards, means cost-free for the owner but not really convenient for oversea guests. So far so good but a paypal account would be more than helpful.
Before booking we asked the owner couple things about the house to make sure, everything is in working conditions. Original quote: “we got few questions: 1. is us-tv
avaiable? YES WE HAVE SATELLITE TV WITH MORE STATIONS THAN ANYONE
COULD EVER WATCH”
We arrived on this beautiful island, took a car from owner’s housekeeper (the one and only time we saw him for 30 seconds) and drove to the house. The house has an amazing location and the pictures on the net don’t lie BUT taking a walk inside, you will find some differences between the owner’s promises and the reality. Except of the washer, dryer and the new refrigerator most of the items in the house are old and in bad conditions. You will enjoy ONE wine glass, plastic dishes, only one kitchen towel, towels “with more holes than cotton”, and air-condition in both bedrooms, which you only turn on when you are away because of the noise. We don’t know what the maid did, but it wasn’t cleaning and not the first time she missed her job, taking a look into the cupboards and finding much dust and food and other items expired more than one year ago. The towels were wet in the cupboard and linens were hanging outside, wouldn’t we took them of, they would be outside for the whole time of our stay… Doesn’t the owner know about her property??? And of course we found the TV with “more stations than anyone could ever watch”. The TV wasn’t working when we arrived and don’t expect anyone will help you! Why didn’t anyone take care of it? Easy answer: noone is really interested! After 3 days, we found out where the housekeeper’s office is, and: surprise, surprise, the receiver was fixed up! Couple of days later, it broke down again (we think they use pirate channels) but even after several calls noone came to fix it. In total we stayed 6 out of 10 days without the TV which was in the package and you read the original words of the owner above!
Our solution is: The Island is fantastic but if you are in any trouble with the house you rented for 1.500 USD per week, you are lost, especially with the housekeeper. We got enough time to read other guest comments in the guest books, and noticed of course many good feedbacks, but several guests got problems too, but did the owner anything against it? NO!
Back at home, we sent the owner an email and told her about the situation and our expectations of a small refund. Only after a friendly reminder we got an answer. Original quote from the owner: “in eleuthera- satellite tv goes in and out all the time- there is no way to ever guarantee that it will always be on unfortunately---the system goes up and down - and there is no remedy---sometimes we have had guests that have had no tv at all-- and also no water or electricity-- that is eleuthera--- it is far from a 5 star resort--- and the common saying is- "eleuthera- it's not for everyone.."-- we do not offer refunds!”
We recommend the island, it is like a 5* resort, but the house is below 2* in the actual conditions and support of the housekeeper! We are travelling much around the world, stayed in many places and saw many properties. We havn’t expect a 5* resort, but trusted in the owner’s words and promises. We recommend to STAY AWAY from this unfriendly (friendly as long as she can earn any money) and stinginess owner from Rhode Island!
Liz and I hopped aboard the Emerald Princess for a Caribbean Cruise out of Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades). The Cruise Ports includes stops at: Princes Cays, St. Maarten/St. Martin, Grand Turk and St. Thomas. I was a nice seven day cruise with beautiful weather and a great ship.
Princess likes to give the big ship feeling without it being overwhelming which is hard to do when the ship can accommodate 3,070 passengers. Princess managed to give us a relaxing cruise where we didn't feel rushed. The ship was very nice with 4 pools, several restaurants, a spa, various lounges and clubs, shopping and more. The Piazza area was their version of a centrum through the middle of the ship with retail , dining rooms, clubs and bars surrounding the area. The staff aboard were very nice and attentive. I enjoyed that this line attracts an "older crowd", less children and less of the party puking variety twenty somethings that other cruise lines tend to cater to.
We chose this cruise in particular due to their port choices and were happy at the smooth embarkation and disembarkation process. Checking onto the ship was also a breeze with our rooms being ready immediately and our luggage arriving quickly.
The shows and entertainment were great fun and we enjoyed the Movies Under the Stars. The food in the dining room is not as good as Royal Caribbean but there were several nights that "Wowed" me. We did like that there were plenty of quick food options such as burgers, hit dogs, pizzas, sandwiches and pastries that were not from the buffet. The drink selection and prices were very good and we enjoyed the variety of themed lounges as well as pool bars.
This was a great cruise and we were very happy to sail Princess. We look forward to our next cruise with them which we have already booked.
We love Eleuthera. It is a wonderful island and we have stayed at a number of places on the island. We decided to try renting Pebbles after finding it listed online. The pictures on the listing looked great, so we booked our stay in April 2010 from Patricia Leigh-Wood. We rented the unit for approximated $200 a night, and were expecting an experience that matched that price in quality.
What a mistake.
After we arrived we quickly found what was not clear from the pictures. Pebbles is dirty. Pebbles is not well maintained. Pebbles has bug issues stemming from the aforementioned cleanliness and maintenance issues.
There were a number of things which made the unit uninhabitable. The rugs on the floor had mites/bugs in them that kept biting us all night. There were electrical problems, so that when we tried to plug in our laptop we got a shock from the plug.
The advertisement said there would be a working telephone, but it would not stop ringing and we had to unplug it. In the kitchen, the dishes in the cupboard were dirty, the microwave was not in working order and there were ants all over the place. The cupboards had a strong smell of insecticide and the dishwasher advertised was in a deplorable condition.
When we got in bed, the sheets had bugs in them that were crawling all over us when we tried to sleep, we had to remove all the blankets before we could sleep. We seriously considered sleeping in the car for the rest of the night.
Usually, landlords ensure their rental unit has either functioning screens or proper doors that prevent bugs from entering. The screens were all in terrible shape and would not keep anything out. The screen doors also had a defect that prevented them from being closed completely, thus failing to prevent bugs from entering.
During our first night there, we sent Patricia Leigh-Wood an email outlining our concerns about Pebbles. After barely sleeping and realizing that nothing would be done, we informed Patricia that we would be checking out by the set check out time. We were left to scramble to find another place to stay last minute to try and salvage our vacation. This also meant paying twice for the week. The owners refused to provide any compensation for the week's stay that we paid for, and have told us they see nothing wrong with the unit.
Please, if you are travelling to Eleuthera do not rent either Pebbles or On The Rocks. There are much better deals to be had on the island that are both more secluded and well maintained.
The worst place we ever stayed on the island, but great beach location.
I have stayed multiple times at Pebbles and On the Rocks, in Governor's Harbor, Eleuthera. They are truly on the most wonderful beach I have ever had the pleasure of visiting, let alone staying at. The beach is so secluded that you can walk for an hour and a half and see only two people. The reason for the name - On the Rocks - is that a natural "stonehenge" formation of rocks is right outside your window, creating a wonderful natural harbor for swimming in. Again, you will be the only person swimming. The main house is a wonderful comfortable home for couples or a whole family, with the kind of open living room that encourages group activities. Pebbles, so called because it is the smaller cottage, is an ideal getaway for a couple. I have taken my children to stay at On the Rocks, and have returned alone to use Pebbles as a writing retreat. It couldn't be more ideal. It's comfortable, tidy, bug-free, well equipped with internet, telephone, and kitchen, and has everything you could want. The entire house is filled with the fresh sea breezes, and an endless view of a perfect ocean. I look forward to my next visit.
Again, the house is unique in it's location - I have never seen such a beautiful beach. Ever
