Coconuts Cottage: At Home in Paradise

Coconuts Cottage is a privately owned vacaton rental on Guana Cay. The cottage is wonderful, and has every amenity you could ask for. The cottage has central A/C, which was so efficient, we had to keep adjusting it, as it felt chilly at times - unbelieveable in July. There are 3 bedrooms, 2 with queen beds, the third with brightly coloured bunk beds, as well as a pull out sofa-bed. It has a full bathroom with tub and shower, as well as an outdoor shower.

The kitchen has all the neccessities, including microwave, coffeemaker , blender, and a VHF radio for catching up on the local events. It was very well stocked with every spice you could imagine, and lucky for us, the previous guests left behind a part bottle of rum, and 8 or 9 cans of beer. Part way through the week, we found another 6 bottles of Red Stripe in the crisper of the fridge!! So of course, we 'payed it forward' and left our extra provisions for the next guests.

Coconuts Cottage is spotless, and well maintained by their caretaker, Frances, who lives just down the road, in case of emergency. Frances will also pick you up at the ferry dock when you arrive, and drop you back there when you leave.

The cottage is located right in the Settlement, so it was within walking distance of the local shops, and a 5 minute walk to either the Atlantic ocean to the East, or the Sea of Abaco to the West.

It's hard to narrow it down, but I think my favourite part of the cottage would have to be the outdoor shower. It was such a wonderful feeling to be outside in the warm sunshine, washing away all the salt and sand, and feeling civilized again.

The cottage has a wrap-around porch, with one end screened in, to keep out the bugs. I enjoyed sitting in the screened area each morning, listening to the birds, and the breeze through the palms, either writing in my journal, or reading Jimmy Buffett's 'A Salty Piece of Land'.

We enjoyed many afternoons either in the porch, playing Bimini Ring Toss (our new favourite pastime), or in the front yard playing horseshoes.
