Sweeping Beachfront Hotel

We did not stay at the British Colonial Hilton because each of the 4 times we have visited Nassau it has been by cruiseship. But even as viewed from the deck of a cruiseship the hotel exudes an historical, old world charm. The hotel was last renovated in 1999 and is considered a world class hotel. Built on the site of the Old Fort Nassau, the British Colonial Hilton is a waterfront beauty. The British Colonial Hilton with its distinquishing golden yellow paint and terra cotta roof is one of the first sights to come into view as you sail into Nassau Harbor and sits on 8 acres of prime waterfront land.

The British Colonial has 291 rooms, a pool, business and meeting facilities, fitness facilities, the Azure Spa, a gift shop and several restaurants and bars including a poolside bar. Live entertainment will fill your nights in the Lounge. Or perhaps you may attend a ball in the Governor's Ballroom on some special occasion. Rooms have comfortable furnishings, high speed internet access and and a marble bathroom.

NOTE: This hotel may not be suitable for some families, because room occupancy is almost totally for two persons only. Suites, however, can accommodate 2 adults and 1 child. Suites are luxuriously furnished and prices for them include continental breakfast and refreshments but have a luxurious price tag too!

Unique Quality: This hotel can boast of many charms but the white sand beach and view has to be its most spectacular feature!! The current building replaces the former elegant Hotel Colonial which was built in 1900. Be sure to look for the statue of Woodes Rogers, the first Royal Governor of the Bahamas who is famous for ridding the Bahamas of its pirate inhabitants and hanging several at one time just about where the hotel sits today!

Overpriced and Overvalued

I was not happy with the stay at all. The bed sunk in in the center. The room was cramped. The hotel staff were not very accomodating. The beach was almost a pathetic excuse for a patch of sand (although it was beautiful, just tiny). I wish I had stayed at the Atlantis.

My favorite Hotel in Nassau

The Hilton Hotel is a good hotel to stay at in downtown Nassau, especially if you visit for business (which most likely will be offshore banking). All major banking service providers are close, most of them within walking distance.

Unique Quality: Private Beach, good bar and restaurant.

British Colonial Hilton

The Hilton is a reasonably priced hotel in the downtown Nassau area. The hotel were pretty pleasant during our stay and always answered our question. The only problem we had is that they forgot to ring us for a wakeup call we requested. They apologized the next day for this.

The hotel itself is about 100 years old. It has been undergoing renovations those some of the décor is a bit date. I think it adds to character of the place and makes for some nice photos. The weekend we were there 2 brides were taking their wedding pictures in the hotel on the staircase.

The rooms are quite comfortable with all the essentials you will need. The bathroom is quite large and has both a bathtub and a shower. The staff kept the room pretty clean during out stay.

On the outside there is a private garden and beach area for hotel guests. There is also a pool and a bar area as well. We spent some time here and were happy with is. The drinks offered were great. The hotel has several bars and restaurants. We ate at one of the restaurant here which had a seafood buffet. Everyone was happy with our meals and service. I have to say the desserts were excellent and I loved there chocolate.

The thing that makes this place a great place to stay is its location. It is just a few blocks from the straw market, so you could buy your item and keep them back at the hotel. It is also on the same block at the Flamingo café and Senor Frogs. After a night of partying you can easily find your way back to your hotel. The Fluid Lounge where tourists and natives listen to hip hop and other music is about 2 blocks from the hotel. You can take a five minute walk to take the boat ferry to Paradise Island or take a cab which take 10 minutes to get there. The restaurants at Fish Cay and Ardastra Garden is about 5-10 minutes by cab or the $1, 10 bus.

Business class hotel on the beach

Stayed for a few days on hotel points. Hotel is a nicely remodeled 1920s hotel so has more character than the atlantis hotels nearby. Did find some issue with them penny pinching as add energy and maid service to all bills which in my opinion should just be included in price of room. Beach area small but nice though do expect to spend plenty of money if you are drinker as this is not an all inclusive and prices are NYC prices. Not very kid friendly resort though as other than a portable basketball goal not much for kids to do other than hang out on beach with you as no kid play area was seen by me. Go to one of the paradise island resorts if have children.

Unique Quality: Gorgeous 2 story bar area and location right near downtown though sadly downtown is geared toward the thousands of cruise ship passengers.

One of the conference rooms had large windows looking out on ocean which do not see often and would be good for wedding.

Beach/Pool Access

Normally I wouldn't contribute a dime to Paris Hilton's family, but beach/pool access here at the Hilton was only $20, which was a great deal compared to the other hotels. And you certainly got a good deal...the beach is beautiful and your towel and chair is included, there were plenty of sun spots and shaded spots available, pool was big and plenty of chairs, waiters came around to take your drink order, lunch type area, clean bathrooms, and a garden area with hammocks. The staff was super friendly as well. If I ever have to spend the night in the Bahamas I would stay here.

Nice place in downtown Nassau

Take an oceanview room and enjoy your stay. You are just steps away from downtown Nassau with all the jewelry shops. Shockingly, Swiss watches are a lot cheaper over there than in Switzerland!

Unique Quality: The private beach: white sand, blue water and and only small waves. Paradise Island is adjacent to the harbour area and protects the hotel beach from wave action.

Nice

Great hotel, filled mostly with business travelers. Nice pool. Nice rooms. Comfy bed. Hilton Diamond member gets access to 6th floor lounge, and this is a good thing, because snacks and booze are free until 8pm. This gets you started before you go out to dinner. A little bit of a beach, but not really that nice, which was okay for me, because I prefer the pool. The cruise ships park right there, so it was always neat to watch them come and go. The entire staff was extremely nice all of the time. We paid $190US per night, but that was $100 less than Atlantis. Atlantis is much much nicer, but this British Colonial Hilton was definitely nice enough for me. There are lots of restaurants, straw market, high end jewelry shopping, within walking distance. All food at each place we ate was excellent, although service in restaurants is slower than paint drying (it's called Island time, expect it!) Everyone else staying at the hotel was also very nice and happy to be there.

More about British Colonial Hilton Nassau

Wonderful

by A TripAdvisor Member

This was my second time in the Bahamas the first was in 97 in Freeport and I thought that hotel/casino was great until now. The British Colonial Hilton is a wonderful place to stay. The rooms were so well kept and provided a touch of elegance. If your looking for a suite make sure you pay extra for it if not a regular room that is a bit smaller should do just fine. I had a wonderful stay in Nassau and plan on going back to stay at the Hilton again next year.

Good choice

by TripAdvisor Member trutripadvisr

I have stayed at the British Colonial Hilton many times and can't understand the negative reviews posted here. This is a beautifully kept property, which is really saying something considering that the hotel is one of the oldest on Nassau! Hilton has invested millions in a top-notch renovation, and all of the rooms and public spaces are nicer than many Hiltons in the US. Like many tourist places, the food can be expensive and small problems can crop up - but by no means are those the norm. If you plan to be in this part of the island, or need a place to overnight before heading to an out island, you can't go wrong.

Nightlife

Hi,
Some girlfriends and I are travelling to the Bahamas very soon. Can anyone please enlighten us as to any nightlife spots where other "middle aged" people visit?
Thanks! :)

The British Colonial Hilton has a local band most nites. They play mostly R&B and soca.. Lots of Sam Cooke, Otis Redding and Righteous Brothers with a mix of local stuff.. VERY entertaining if you are looking for a lounge scene.
They also have a Jazz Club upstairs from Thursday to Sunday. I think some nites are Latin nites.. but I'm not sure.
