Nassau
by call_me_rhia
Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas Islands and it's located on the island of New Providence. Its population is about 260000 people - mostly living in the city. The older parts of it are very charming - in particular the Georgian government buildings.
In the past the island where Nassau lies was occupied by the Spanish, the French, the Americans and even by British pirates, who formed a sort of Pirate Republic, here. In 1718 the British took control of the island and got rid of the Pirates - then built forts to prevent them from returning. An worthless effort - sonce they never bothered to try and recapture their "land". I must admit that nassau has failed to really fascinate me... there's plenty of interesting old-ish sighs - but the downtown area has become very commercial... banks, jewellery stores, banks, duty-free alcohol shops, banks, souvenir shops, banks... all grey concrete. There is charm, but it's in between a lot of ugly buildings.
Conch Shells for the tourist.

This is a picture I took While in Nassau it shows a family hunting and cleaning Conch shells to resell. They do seem to sell good at the Straw Market. I could buy one for about $10.00 My best memory of Nassau was just pulling up to the dock and seeing it for the very first time.

Don't be afraid to use the bus service to get around -its cheap and easy. Shopping downtown was much like any other cruise port. We managed to catch some of Junkanoo which is the annual New Years Parade. The costumes where spectacular.

From the moment I landed and disembarked from the plane to walk to the terminal a warm sea breeze heady with the scent of flowers was there to great me. The greeting from customs was warm and I felt as though I were a million miles away from the problems and weather at home.

Visit Paradise Island. The biggest hotel there (I sort of forgot the name but you can see it as you cross the bridge from Nassau to Paradise Island) is phenomenal. I have never seen a nicer hotel. Even in Las Vegas. It truly was Paradise. I would love to stay in Paradise Island the next time I come to the Bahamas.
