Travel Tips for Paradise Island

Paradise Island

by call_me_rhia

Paradise Island is just a few minutes away from Nassau, the capital of of the Bahams Islands localed onNew Providence Island. It's a separate island but they are connected by two bridges. A taxi there will cost about 10 dollars, or else you can take the Paradise Island Ferry for 6 dollars per person. In the past its name was less appealing, as it used to be called Hog Island. There's not much to do on Paradise Island, you come here to enjoy the excellent beaches. There are some hotels, there - including the very scary Las-Vegas style Atlantis resort: ugly and overpriced - and some truly expensive shops (Atlantis-owned)

If you are a movie buff you'll have the feeling you have seen this island before... James Bond's Thunderball was partially filmed here.

Proof of Citizenship

by AliasGirl

You'll need to make sure your passport is up to date before traveling to the Bahamas!

For US citizens, a birth certificate and a photo ID are also acceptabe forms of citizenship. Citizens of British Commonwealth countries do not need visas.

Aquarium

by grandmaR

The only reason for us to visit Paradise Island was to go to the aquarium at Atlantis. We are not beach people, and I'm not into captive dolphin swims or spending a lot of money to be around other tourists. Apparently is isn't sufficient to have a wonderful aquarium full of local fish. It is necessary to house the fish in a fake "Lost Atlantis" setting.

But the aquarium itself was wonderful, if expensive.

Waterfalls and waterslides

by Paradiseblue

The pools and water slides of the atlantis resort are amazing and definately worth going to even if you're not staying there. (day passes are sold in the shopping center by the hotel and access is granted when you are staying at the comfort suites or other adjacent hotels). The whole landscape is incredible and the man-made beaches and waterfalls are breathtaking. I definately miss the perfect crystal clear pool-like turquoise waters which you can only find in the bahamas.

Bahamian Currency

by AliasGirl

If you are staying in the Atlantis Resort, you will not need to exchange your money. Most everything can be charged to your room and then charged directly to your credit card on file.

If you leave the resort, then you may need Bahamian money, however shop owners are very willing to take USD and may give you either a mixture of Bahamian and USD dollars back. We just asked for USD change whenever possible. We came home with a few Bahamian Dollars, but I just added it to our scrapbbook. No worries! Usually Bahamian Dollars are 1 to 1 with USD.
