The old military base

by noel1225

I was on the island as a young marine in the mid 50's for 19 months ----one word says it all, PARADISE!!!
The island and people are beautiful and it's my reason for returning for a vacation. My question, what ever happened to that navy base? Was there a Tetron Bay?A thank you to all replys!!!

An agreement was reached in 1960-1 (a year before independence) to return the Chaguaramas navy base to Trinidad sovereignty. The majority of the base was handed over in 1967 except for a small area which contained a missile tracking station which was closed in 1977. The Chaguaramas area is largely a nature preserve open to the public. The coastal area on the south has quite a few yacht marinas. Tetron Bay on the end of the peninsula is a Trinidad & Tobago Defence Force (combined Army and Coast Guard) base requiring a pass for entry. If you are planning to visit the area, you could look out for a plaque commemorating the US base on the sea-side of the road just after the bauxite terminal by where I assume the US base gates were. As well, there is a small Chaguaramas Military History museum [tel # (868) 634-4391] which may provide some further documentation.

Travel Tips for Port-of-Spain

Brian Lara

by Josilver

Brian Lara (he was a cricket player for those who dont know) is a hero in Trinidad, I saw this tribute to him painted on the side of a tomb at the cemetary, no he hasn't died just retired from cricket. There is also a Brian Lara Beulevade in the city centre.
