Hotel suggestions for Port of Spain
We will be spending the first 2 nights of our trip in Port of Spain with plans to take some days trips from there to San Fernando and the Asa Wright Nature Center. We are looking for suggestions for a safe, reasonably affordable place to stay in Port of Spain that is close to "the action" but also in a safe place.
We don't need luxury...just clean, safe, affordable & convenient.
Any suggestions?

There is a holiday inn close to the airport - it was still being built when I was there. There are several brand name chain hotels in the city, all of them seem quite expensive. What ever you do do not stay at the Bel Aire at the airport - the pictures on the website were taken the day it opened 30 years ago and nothing has been updated since.

There are really only a few decent options. The Holiday Inn (Airport), The Crown Plaza, The Hilton, and the fairly new Hyatt. Near San Fernando Is the Cara Suites. For the money, I would definitely stay at the Hyatt.
For costs, I used Feb 19th to give you a general idea of what to expect.

The Asa Wright center is reachable from Port of Spain. I don't know if you were planning to do that as a separate trip or from San Fernando. Your post was a bit unclear.
In the city of San Fernando, I stayed and would recommend the Tradewinds. ~$80 per double room. details are in my tip if you're interested.
