The Cruz Inn: Now Closed

When we stayed on St. John, I had a choice of camping (two campgrounds with various types of accommodation) or staying at Caneel Bay (a fancy hotel) or renting a house which usually had to be rented for a week. I searched for an alternate place to stay which would be available for less than a week. And I found The Cruz Inn.

The Cruz Inn was a small place with two sets of rooms some of which shared a bath. I booked the 'suite' which was under the patio where we had breakfast and it was A/C and had a kitchen. Every morning there was juice, coffee, rolls and fruit (included in the price) and we would eat on the patio and watch the birds. We could also see the water and the dump from here.

The lady that ran the place was very helpful in telling us where to eat and shop.

Estate Lindholm: Charming accommodations

Although called a B&B, it is a resort in miniature. Wonderful little tropical estate they have inside the national park boundaries. Easy walk down the hill into Cruz Bay. The estate being up on a hill, the views looking out over Cruz Bay with the sea and other islands beyond are beautiful. The rooms are very clean, very pleasant. The breakfast patio is delightful, with a little kitchen and bar area where you can serve yourself a simple but good breakfast. The bar is self serve, honor system, available 24 hours. Lauren is the hostess. She is very nice. Wonderful place.

Hiking trails through the forest take you down to Honeymoon beach, an exquisite stretch of sand, palms, azure waters. Also walking distance is the Caneel Bay resort, where you can use their beaches and (at least off season) wander around the grounds. Rent a jeep and drive out to the southeast point of St. John where you can hike the Salt Pond Bay trail, the Drunk Bay trail and the Ram Head trail. The latter trail takes you ultimately out to a rocky point 200 feet above the water. This trail is simply breathtaking. The view at the end is other-worldly.
