The girl at the reception was SO friendly by Filipdesmet I didn't search for cheap accomodation in Shkoder. So, I decided to pay a lot this time (45 eur), too much for me, but anyway, I could rest in a very nice room and the breakfast was very good. But still 45 euro is way too much for my budget. Hotel Rozafa (?) 1988 by JLBG This is not a practical tip as the photo was taken in 1988 ! This was a state hotel (everything was state owned!) where we spent one night. All the hotels where we went during our 1988 trip were very basic but comfortable. I have read that in 2005, there were several other hotels in Shkod?r but have not checked it as we were on a day trip. Theme: HotelAddress: Rruga Marin Barleti close to the Five Heroes square

Possibly the cheapest bed in Albania, the Hotel Parku I think is aimed at the local market and probably doesn't have that many foreign guests. The freindly but slightly eccentric lady at reception is easily impressed by a word or two of Albanian, and I managed a whole phrase (memorized from a phrasebook!), so provided her with amusement for the whole day! Rooms are basic but clean and comfortable, and you pay per bed. A bed goes for 600 Lek, but to get a key for the room requires paying for both beds, 1200 Lek, otherwise you'll end up sharing with the next walk-in guest, something I was not willing to do after enduring the snores of Tirana's backpacker dorm. Still, at 1200 Lek, it is cheaper than any other hostel Albania (or Kosovo, Macedonia or Bulgaria for that matter) has to offer. The shared bathroom facilities are perhaps the only real drawback. Two squat toilets, one tap, low ceiling, no light, no shower. Hmmm...well, for one night I can cope with that...
The location is great, in a sidestreet off a park, with the university and its bars and cafes just a minute's walk in one direction, the centre of town two minutes' walk in the other. Yes, I did say sign...see, they do exist in Albania, just need museums and bus stations to follow suit!

This is arguably the best hotel in Shkoders (A claim that could only be considered by two other hotels in town) and at €50.00 a night is what would be considered mid-range pricing in most of Europe. The hotel is opposite Piazza Park, 100m from the mainroundabout (True centre) of Shkoder. Second floor rooms have a balcony, forget your standardised Ibis or Travel Lodge hotels, whilst its fair to say Hotel Colosseo is not as grand as somewhere like the Raffles hotel it is non the less both independant and luxureous compared to may hotels in the world. I met the hotel owner after I was unable to pay for my room (Not a single cash point would take my debit or credit card) who was a decent guy. He even offered to lend me money and drove me to the station, I ended up having to wire him the money for my room once back in England Theme: HotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterDirections: Next to the new Mosque, opposite piazza park just 100m from the main Roundabout defining the centre of ShkoderWebsite: www.colosseohotel.com

We arrived from Podgarica by taxi, I would have preferred an alternative means of transport as I think the 60 Euros could have been had for 30 or 40 Euro but my travel companion was hot and bothered and with the temprature on arrival after arriving on the night train from Belgrade was already 30+ at 9am. I never think arguing with a female is good when they are in a bad mood. Well the 1 hr + drive was fantastic passing through the mountains and Lake Skadar (Scutari) and we needed a comfortable place, good shower, change of clothes and a meal to chill out after leaving Budapest the previous day at 13.05. We were welcomed by Hasan who although in his late 60`s or early 70`s was so friendly. The receptionist could speak English but Hasan only in French and Italian. There was a choice of luxury or very comfortable, we opted for the cheaper at 18 euros, the lux version was 26 euro I think. In fact we had to wait half an hour while the electricians was putting the finishing touches to the newly renovated room. They had a restaurant where we could get meals and they served breakfast. There were TV`s in the room and an en suite bathroom. The hotel had it`s own water supply and generator which was a blessing as some accom and hotels would be hit by water rationing and power cuts.
Hasan took over the building after his father. His father was a dentist who worked in Italy pre war, then when WWII came and the Itallians occupied Albania, the building was chosen as their headquarters, and the Germans came too. After the war ended and Hoxha came to power with his communist dictatorship and a period which must have been the hardest 50 years of oppression for it`s people. The building was turned into a state orphanage and left to fall apart. Then in the early `90`s with the demise of Hoxha and communism, Albania was again free. Hasan and his family restored the building and after several years even secured good contacts in Italy and other western countries with tourist agencies to begin with a new found interest in Albania. Then with the pyramid schemes came civil war and anarchy, so all dreams of having a prosperous hotel and good life were dashed. Then in 2003 tourists started to trickle, and I mean trickle back, so in 2008 his hotel was totally refurbished and renovated to a very good standard. Hasan and his wife Kydrete (He told me a wonderful story how they met, he was the teacher and she was his student, and have been married many years). There are wonderful pictures of his family on the wall and once he took me to a local cafe and kebab place and could see he was well respected. Our 2 day stay was highly memorable and one of the best stays I have had in my life. Some places in Albania have people which are 10 times more friendly than most western european countries and a luxury that would cost 10 times more in any Western European capital. This is the final frontier in Europe to find those undiscovered places. I can hardly recommend the Mondial Hotel in Shkodra. I was charged 80 euros per night for a "suite" with single occupancy. They informed me that no other room was available except on the top floor (no lift) under the eaves--a blatant lie. I invited two friends up to my room for two hours for drinks one evening and upon checking out, I was charged an extra 30 euros for double occupancy for one night! Breakfast was served in a lovely garden cafe, but everything was processed and in little packages. One's coffee was served always 30 to 60 minutes after the breakfast. I had to leave at 6am for a flight and I found myself locked IN the hotel--not very safe! It was impossible to find any staff member to open up and I very nearly nearly missed the plane.
Very clean and the staff was quite polite. Theme: HotelPrice: US$80-120 » Currency ConverterComparison: most expensiveAddress: Central ShkodraPhone: +30 22840 51637Other Contact: merylin@myk.forthnet.gr
