Is it worth the trip?

by satossa

We will be in Lleida Oct. 9 after 4 nights in Barcelona. We have been considering driving up to Andorra just for the drive and then returning to Barcelona via Manresi. We leave from Barcelona Oct. 12 which gives us 3 nights away. We don't look for night life, rather we prefer "off the beaten path" kind of touring/holidaying. Has anyone done this drive? Is it worth the trip?

I have been many times to Andorra not from Lleida but from Barcelona. The route is nothing to write home about but Andorra (country) is worth seeing. It has wonderful mountains, valleys and lakes for walking tours ans sports activities. I think you would need 2 or 3 days touring the main spots of the country. Don't bother visiting Andorra capital because you will find just loads of shops and nothing else.

(Look out the tourist offices)

Apart from that I suggest you another option to visit from Lleida. It is a must. I mean "Pirineo Aragonés", which is an impressive area. Ordesa Valley,Bielsa, Ainsa, Benasque, Jaca..
Enjoy it!

Thank you for your suggestion. Do you know of any web sites in English describing the Pirineo Aragonés? I have looked a couple of times, but can only find pages in Spanish.

Absolutely agree with chiqui above. Andorra (coutry, not the capital) is pretty nice. However, I have been to most parts of the Pyrenees many times, and with no doubt my favourite area is the Aragonese part. You can base in Jaca and do wonderful daytrips from there.
Another option closer to Lleida is Vall de Bohi with its small towns with Romanic churches (Unesco heritage).

BTW, I've a couple of tips in my VT pages, feel free to email me for more info.

You are right it is not easy to find sites written in english about Aragonese pyrenees.
This area is visited mainly for tourists from everywhere of Spain.

If you have any question just let me know.

Just return from Andorra. Not worth the trip unless you want to go for skiing. All mountainous region. Barcelona is a better place to visit with lots of things to see, shop and eat. To pay for the trip to Andorra will be better spent for shopping in Barcelona.

Travel Tips for Andorra la Vella

Hang on the rocks

by matcrazy1

When I walked a little bit futher west of the old town, I saw houses hang on high rock cliffs with balconies overlooking the valley down. They were built in typical for Pyrenees style: made of natural stones and rocks, covered by gable roofs and had wooden balconies.

In contrast to vast valleys I have seen in the Alps, the valley of Andorra la Vella is relatively narrow. Thus there is no much space for the next buildings. The other reason for construction edificies higher and higher is air pollution from traffic down in the bottom of the valley. And the views over the mountains and valley from these hanging high in the rocks houses have to be spectacular.

Andorra

I first stumbled into Andorra la Vella on the way to France from Barcelona. Andorra la Vella is the principal town of Andorra, a tiny principality is situated in the Pyrenees. It is an independent country and it's popular as a duty free country. As a result, Andorra la Vella has become a by-word for Spanish and French shoppers as a shoppers paradise. As one walks along Avinguda (Avenue) Meritxell and Carlemany, there are lots of flashy boutique shops and modern malls that sell European and American fashion brand names and Japanese electronic goods at duty free prices. For a small town, Andorra la Vella and its nearby suburb of Escaldes have fashioned itself has the HongKong of Europe. It has more shops per capita than any in Europe. Just about any goods you need are here.

But one thing that is amazing about Andorra la Vella is that the looming presence of the snow capped mountains constantly reminds you that you are in nestled in an Alpine region. Andorra is right in the heart of the Pyrenees mountain range that separates Spain and France. The existence of Andorra as an independent state between the 2 European superpower raises curiosity from many outsiders.
