Travel Tips for Heiligenblut

watch the murmots & use them for your anckles

by globetrott

The best area to watch marmots is at Pasterze and Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Hoehe, where they will mostly come rather close to your camera-lenses, when you throw them something to eat. On my 5th picture you may see the place, where they mostly will be : under the wall facing the Pasterze-glacier and Gletscherbahn.
In case that you would like to take a close-up picture you may as well take a picture of the murmots in Restaurant Edelweisspitze (my main picture)
b.t.w. Murmeltier-Balsam is made of the fat of marmots and it helps against tired and worn-out knies and anckles in most cases, it also smells "heathly" (a bit like in hospital). In the souvenir-shops in the alpine-areas you might see them sold in small glasses. It helped me a bit some time ago and it might make a special souvenir for you as well. You may order it also at the web-page below, unfortunately it is only in German !

Heiligenblut

by globetrott

Heiligenblut is the first village you will get to, when driving over the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse and going to the south, to Kaernten. After the crusades some drops of the holy blood of Jesus were taken to Heiligenblut according to the ledgends, so this is where the name comes from.
A long time before that alpine road was built a mountain-path existed for merchants and other travellers to get across that mountain-massiv. Heiligenblut used to be the last point to fill up provisions before they started, so this place is well known and important for a long time already.
Dont miss to take a look into the pilgrim-church of Heiligenblut and to take a walk through the village with many old houses.
