I've been going to Heiligenblut and staying in the same hotel for the past twenty years. Sad? No, just very lucky. Heiligenblut is a fantastic place summer or winter for those who love good food, friendly locals, views and mountains...........and my god, has this place got some mountains! Great for summer walking (climbing more like) and winter skiing or sliding from one drinking/eating hut to another. The village is pretty, the scenery breathtaking, and it's not over run with english tourists. As for a hotel? Check out the Pen. Larchenhof on www.ski-heiligenblut.at run by the family Trojer. It's four star, has wonderful food and rooms, looks over the village and is only five minutes from the ski lift. If you have never been to Austria and want to be in a real Austrian village - this is the place. Go there! Summer or Winter.......you may never want to come back.
Unique Quality: Fantastic scenery.
The village is in a national park area, so it's not over built and full of crap shops and hotels.
If you want to feel like you are in the middle of bloody nowhere, you can be!
Great walking.
Friendly feeling about the place.
Great food........so go on a diet before and afterwards.
Good place to start skiing.
It's very near to the Grossglockner - the highest mountain in Austria.
The pen. larchenhof will pick you up from the airport (Salzburg or Klagenfurt)
The mountains.
Directions: The Molltal Valley.
Heiligen church- centre of the village
turn right at the parkplatz out side the Hotal Post.
Top of this road is the Pen. Larchenhof.........it is well signposted.
