Dr.-Franz-Rehrl Haus is the name of this geat restaurant and hotel with a perfect panorama-view and the largest parking-area of the northern side of Grossglockner. Some of the rooms have private facilities, some will have just a shower and a shared toilet. Prices are between 28 and 35 euros per Person in the double-room, breakfast included.
The first impression will be the large ibex-monument in the restaurant garden and even more the really interesting decorations inside the restaurant - see some of them in my restaurant-tips !
Glocknerhaus is one of the oldest mountain-hotels of the Grossglockner-area, dating back more than 125 years already and the way it looks nowadays is a perfect combination of the old, traditional architecture and the modern winter-garden, that was added some years ago.
Glocknerhaus is a perfect place to stay for all hikers, who intend to step up to Pasterze-gletscher from there.
Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse does not have any official places for wild camping and parking of motorhomes but you may find some places that could be used to stay overnight, like the one on my main picture, just about 1 km north of Fuschertoerl. You might as well ask at some of the restaurants, sometimes they will give you the permission to stay on their ground, IF you will take dinner or breakfast in their restaurant.
Karl-Volkerthaus is another hotel, close to Glocknerhaus, at the southern part of Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse. This hotel offers a great view and many hiking-paths starting closeby.
Karl-Volkert-Haus has 54 beds and prices start with 19 euros per person.
Edelweiss-Huette is my favorite place to spend the night, simply because they also have small huts to rent - one of them is shown on my main picture. The price for a night in such a hut is 35 euros per Person, for single-use you pay just 5 euros extra and breakfast is included as well.
Besides these small alpine-huts you may also rent ordinary rooms, with or without private facilities and will pay between 29 euros and 45,- euros per Person and between 5 and 15 euros extra for single-rooms, breakfast included.
The view from Edelweiss-Huette is simply breathtaking !
This 3-star hotel is located in Heiligenblut`s neighbour community Großkirchheim- and it is sooo nice! Großkirchheim itself is a lovely village in the national park with old farmhouses and even a little castle of the 12th century. Actually I find that Großkirchheim is nicer than Heiligenblut. The building is mainly made of wood and looks like a typical old Austrian farmhouse. It is nicely decorated in a traditional style. The big double rooms have wooden panelled walls and are equipped with a sofa and chairs as well- it was more like a suite than a double room. It also had a big terrace. It felt like being in a little wooden cottage of it`s own. The bathroom was spacious too, with a bath tub, an additional shower and a double sink. They have a "vitality area" in the basement, with a mini sauna and a steam bath as well as a relaxing room. Behind the house is a very big garden. The owner Anton is a very friendly guy and a mountain guide as well, so he can take you for a tour to the Großglockner in summer. The breakfast was ok, for dinner I reccomend to go to the centre of Großkirchheim to the Hotel- restaurant Post which has the better food and is cheaper as well. The nice thing about the restaurant was, that they have a fireplace which makes it very cosy. What I liked best about the hotel is that they have about 15 Haflinger horses (and 1 donkey) and you can go for excursions on horseback. If you are not fond of horses, there are 2 tennis courts and the public swimming pool next to the hotel. Prices in the main season are about 58 EUR (with breakfast) - 65 EUR (with dinner) per person for a big room.
Youth Hostel in the centre of the town. if you don't like dorms this one has twin rooms so you can dump your stuff all over the place and R-E-L-A-X.
High in the mountains with the Grossglockner itself towering above you.
