Klagenfurt question

by Acer84

We have bought cheap tickets to Klagenfurt (Austria) from Gotenburg (Sweden) for the Easter holidays (form 4-13 of april)and were planning to travel somewhere else than, may be do you know some cheap ways to get to Ljubljana, Budapest, Bratislava, Prague, Rome, etc around Austria. We are not going to visit these capitals at once, but rather really want to see at least 1-2 countries. Maybe do you know some buses or trains which are coming from Klagenfurt to these cities for acceptable price ??!! thanks in advance!!!!!!! Best regards from Sweden!!!

Re: Klagenfurt question

Hy, it's a very crazy trip but I like it!!!
Well, there are connection both Klagenfurt-Ljubljana and Ljubljana-Venice. I
don't know fares because are international routes but I explaine and give you
timetable links.
Klagenfurt-Ljubljana: There is a train every 2 hours, you must change in
Villach
but you've 6 minutes only for change. If you lose it, don't worry: the next is
2 hours after. Trip is 2.10 hours long.
Austrian railways link here:http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp You must write
Laibach: it's Ljubljana's german name.
Schienenersatzverkehr means trip details

Ljubljana-Venice: There isn't a direct by train. You must back in Villach by
train and, in front the station, catch the bus to Venezia/Mestre. It stops near
the station. Venezia/Mestre-Venezia Santa Lucia and you arrive. Trip is around 7 hours

It was a direct train but it was deleted, I don't know why.
I don't know for direct buses, sorry.
Have a nice trip and enjoy yourself!!!
Ciao, Marco

Travel Tips for Klagenfurt

Interactive map and accommodation.

by A2002

http://www.gis-klagenfurt.at/

The above website is a link to the interactive map to Klagenfurt. It is a useful link though. After clicking here and there, I found there's actually a list of accommodation. Just click on the one that you like, and the contact information of the accommodation will be available (email, telephone, homepage, address). I find it useful.

The cathedral

by Bjorgvin

Visit the cathedral, built in 1578-1591 on the orders of Klagenfurt’s first mayor. The church had to be rebuilt in 1724 in its present form after it had been completely destroyed by fire. When the bishops of Gurk moved to Klagenfurt (1787) the church became seat of the diocese of Gurk.

Winter Sports

by PetraG

What about a winter holiday? Enjoy skiing and snowboarding right in the heart of the city – you can even go floodlight skiing on the "Schleppe-Alm", which is just five minutes from the centre of Klagenfurt. Try out cross-country skiing on the many well-tended cross-country tracks, or take pleasure in ice-skating on the Lend canal or on the many ponds in the area. Or how about skating on the largest open-air ice-skating area in Europe – Lake Wörthersee (when it’s frozen over).

ROASTED CHESNUTS

by ATLC

I always find it lovely to smell roasted chesnuts. You don't see that sort of thing in The Netherlands.
I bought a bag on a Sunday morning, very early after a brisk stroll through a very quiet and empty Klagenfurt.
It was about 9 in the morning and I already had a good hour's walk behind me. Stopped to talk to the chesnut man. It was cold and I wondered how he held out in his knitted sweater.
Oh yes, a small paper bag with chesnuts cost me € 2.

This wonderful hotel with an excellent art-nouveau-facade is on your way from Alter Platz to Neuer Platz and I think it is well worth to take a look at the nice balconies and other decorations of the facade.
