Car Parking
by Imbi
If you are driving into Klagenfurt and want to leave the car, this city offers restricted parking zones where you can park for 90 minutes in specially marked "blue zones," so-called because of blue lines on the road. You have to use a parking voucher to stop in limited-parking zones: Vouchers can be purchased at banks, gas stations, or tobacconists. When you park, you must write in the time you arrived and display it on the dashboard, inside the windshield

If you decide to stay at the hostel, dont worry to much about lugging huhe bags about, because the buses are practically door to door. There are wardrobes etc there and a lock on the door. If you travel during the winter, take thermals and decent shoes that don't leak! You can get pretty much anything there, there is even a Woolworths
Gustav Mahler's Composition Hut
by mydreamquest
If you are a fan of the great Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, about a 4 hours drive south of Vienna is Klagenfurt.
Mahler was a late romantic composer who's influence bridged Romanticism with the Modern Classic sounds of Alban Berg, Stravinsky, and Schoenberg.
In fact his great Symphony #6 was created here around the summer of 1901, a tragic symphony written during the happiest summer of his life. The symphony would hauntingly end up being a tragic symbol of three major "blows" in his life which would lead to his early death at the age of 51 in 1911 (a few years prior to the beginning of the Great War--World War One). After that summer, his daughter died of scarlet fever, his lead conducter job from the Vienna Opera was taken from him for anti-semitic reasons; and in 1906, he was diagnosed with a fatal irregular heartbeat.
Although Mahler lived in Vienna during the Opera Season, he would retreat to this hut to compose. He loved nature and walks by Lake Mor. If you stay in the city center in Klagenfurt, ask a tourist office or your hotel about Mahler's compositon hut. It's a short 5 mile drive or so from the city centre. You park by the lake and there's a nice 1 kilometer walk to his hut. In the hut will be a cd player, playing great Mahler Symphonies.
If you've not listened to Mahler, check out the Adagietto of his 5th Symphony. His music is passionate, warm, moody, sometimes dark, and a world of emotions and intensity.
There is no charge to walk to his composition hut and if you like walking in the forests without roughing it, this is the perfect solution.
Landskron - a great halfdaytrip
by globetrott
Burgruine Landskron &
the Greifvogelshow at the castle are a perfect halfdaytrip from Klagenfurt and it can also be easily combined with a visit to the Fahrzeugmuseum Villach.
Burg Landskron is a castle high above a hill in the north-east of Villach and first you have to pay a toll for the steep private road to the castle. The parking on top is free of charge and the visit of the castle as well. Its mainly a restaurant with various restaurant-gardens with an excellent view and large halls for incentives and private festivities. You can attend eagles-shows there, where eagles are flying free close to the audience, its a pity that I missed it, they have 3 such shows in summertime and thats the only thing you have to pay extra !
The Greifvogelshow is a performance of eagles flying free in the arena of Burg Landskron.
they have 3 performances every day in july and august and just 2 performances during the other days of summer between May 1st and October 31st. When walking through the castle you will see some of the eagles in their large fences and for some more you have to pay some entrancefee for the zoo!

sundays also at 04.30pm
in July & August: daily 11.00am + 02.30 + 05.30pm
