Driving with US license in Austria
by avr2101
Do I NEED a international drivers permit in Austria if I have a US license.. I know thats the written rule, but how closely is it followed? Anyone tried renting a car without an IDP? anyone been refused to rent without it?

I have never been asked for my international license when renting cars in Europe, but I've always taken the trouble to get one anyway on the off chance that SOMETHING happens and you get a policeman in a bad mood. Call it $10.00 insurance.

If you don't have an international drivers license, and you are involved in some sort of accident, the police could take your drivers license away until the incident is resolved. That means that if you should be heading for home or leaving the country the possibility does exsist that you may leave without your license. If you have an international drivers license, then you can give that to the police, and if you have to leave the country, you will still have your original license with you. As the other poster pointed out, it is cheap insurance.

I wouldn't take the risk, if I was you. Even if you manage to rent a car without an IDP, you are still at risk of beeing stopped by a police patrol. And that can be very expensive then.
Travel Tips for Klagenfurt
Go to Stadttheater
by Imbi
The largest, grandest, and most formal theater in Klagenfurt is the Stadttheater,
which presents opera, classics of German theater, and chamber and orchestral music performed by visiting groups. Built in 1910, this building went through a 2-year renovation (ending in 1998) that has given it a new, state-of-the-art interior.

Visit Minimundus, the little...
by Lisa2002
Visit Minimundus, the little world of Klagenfurt/Wörthersee, its parks and the beautiful lake itself, where you can enjoy the sun and the nightlife in summer.
In winter you should go ice scating, snowboarding or skiing or you visit one of the indoor-swimmingpools in Klagenfurt and Warmbad Villach.
Don't miss DAS LABYRINTH in July and August every year (www.labyrinth.at)!
Curling
by ATLC
A typical sport where you throw a heavy disc on a narrow icerink about 20 metres long.
The aim is to get as close as you can get to a black disc at the end of the rink.
However you play with two teams and you can throw the other team off course. ice rink and those discs but above all: someone to teach you and keep score!
Mahler house
by margaretvn
Mahler had a composing cottage in Steinbach am Attersee in Upper Austria. He gave this house up and looked for another which he found in 1900 at Klagenfurt. On the Worthersee is the little house where Gustav Mahler used to compose when there. He was encharmed with this little house in the woods, he is known to have said that in such an idyllic place one did not compose but was composed. In this house he composed his 4th - 8th symphonies, the "Tamboursg'sell", the The Ruckert songs and the "Kindertotenleider" (I love that even though it always makes me cry.
Mahler was director of the Imperial and Royal Court Opera in Vienna. It was only in the summer months he was able to set himself to his real passion of composing. In 1907 the composer was stroke by three awful blows: he had to resign as director of the opera, his darling daughter, Maria, died (she was 5 years old) and he heard that he had a heart disease.
You park your car about 15 minutes from the house (which is well signposted) and walk through the woods to the house. it is tiny but full of information about the composer and the man looking after it is a real lover of his music and plays it all the time you are there.

St.Veit an der Glan
A visit to St. Veit can be easily be combined with a daytrip from Klagenfurt to Burg Hochosterwitz and Maria Saal, as it is in a distance of just 14km from Klagenfurt ! Sankt Veit has a great baroque townsquare with an interesting townhall. In St. Veit you will see also a big part of the medieval townwall there still and for all the fans of modern austrian art, there is also a hotel designed by Professor Ernst Fuchs, read more about it in my hoteltips about St.Veit!
Calculate about 1 hour for St. Veit, its just a small town and walking around is very easy and finding a parkingspace was also no problem at all ! The 1st hour of parking is free !
