Gmünd - the original Porsche-fabrication
by globetrott
Gmünd is the hometown of Prof. F.Porsche and it was also here in Gmünd where he had started to build his first Porsche-cars right after WW II. Between 1948 and 1950 a total of 43 Porsche 356 Coupe and 8 Porsche 356 cabriolet were built in Gmünd before the production was completely transferred to Germany and Porsche became one of the most famous car-productions of the world.
This carmuseum shows some special cars constructed by Ferdinand Porsche, including the famous VW beetle and a lot more.
In my Gmünd-page you can see all of the exhibits in the travelogues !

Villacher Alpe
by Manara
The Villacher Alpe (m 2167) is the nearest mountain to Villach, and provides the nearest hiking or skiing facilities.
The Villacheralpenstrasse starts just outside Villach and in its 16.5 Km takes you from an altitude of about m 600 to about 1500. There are 5 parking places along the route, and a 6th one at the end. Each one can be the starting point for walks on scenic paths.
There is a toll to pay to drive on the Villacheralpenstrasse, because it is one of those roads that do not connect villages or towns, but were built and are kept just for excursions and skiing.
A mix of Austrian, Italian and Slovenian
by leplaya
Villach is a city located at the foothills of the Julian Alps, about 10-15 km from the Austrian/Italian/Slovenian border. The center of the city is fairly small, but it can get lively during the day. This is esepcially true in the summer near the time of Kirchstag (early August) where folk music is playing all day and everyone is drinking beer.
Because of its proximity to Italy and Slovenia, there is a healthy mix of those and Austrian cultures. This is where you could hear Slovenian music, drink Austrian beer and eat Italian gellato.
Bilachinium
by Bjorgvin
This charming town is situated in Carinthia, southern Austria, on the Drava (Drau) River, west of Klagenfurt. Here was once upon a time the Roman town of Bilachinium, an important trade centre then and in the Middle Ages. Now it is once again a thriving centre for commerce and tourism. For a long time (1007-1759) it formed part of the bishopric of Bamberg. Villach is near the borders with Slovenia and Italy and is Carinthias´s second largest town after Klagenfurt. Villach is a spa town and a skiing centre. The Celts and the Romans discovered the thermal springs at Villach, and the therapeutic qualities of the healing waters are well known since then. In the winters there is ice skating on frozen lakes, skiing, snowboarding or cross country skiing in the Villach Alps und the surrounding skiing areas.
