Re: Train travel

Second class 15.70 euro one way ad First Class 27.50 euro one way. Duration of journey is approx 1 hour 20 minutes. Trains leaves from Wien Westbahnhof.

A second class ticket 15.70 euro one way, 31.40 euro return

You can buy a combined ticket for train to Melk, Abbey admission, boat to Krems and train back to Vienna for a bit less than 50 euro.

Well, under proper circumstances even 6 Euro / round-trip is possible!

If there are more of you, than of course buy "Einfach Raus" ticket. It is valid for entire day, it's like a railpass and up to five people can use the same ticket. So the more of you travel together, the cheaper it is pro person. The price of "Einfach Raus" ticket is 28 Euro - so if there are five people, than the entire round-trip from Vienna to Melk is a under 6 Euro pro person.

There is a little "gotcha": on weekdays the ticket is valid from 9:00 AM till 3:00 AM (next day) and you can use regional trains only.

Travel Tips for Melk

Great views of Melk town from Stift Melk

by victorwkf

One of my fondest memories of Melk were the great views of the old town from the balcony of the Stift Melk. In fact, you can see the whole town from here, as well as the Danube River plus surrounding natural landscape and hills.

The balcony area of Stift Melk is located after the museum area and before you enter the impressive library and monastery church areas. Besides views of the old town, the balcony area offers great views of the exterior facade of the Stift Melk.

FRESCOES,BEAUTIFULLY ORNAMENTED STAIRCASES

by robertop

When visiting the library,or the marble hall
you will watch the exuisite frescoes which are decorating even the ceilings. Some may find the baroque style too exagerated, but that was the art style of those times and we cannot judge this by our today's art concepts.Everything is done with so much care for the detail, even the endless prancing angelsand the gold twirls. That care for detail is seen also in the library with the mirror room, with beautifully painted ceilings, the imperial rooms where various dignitaries(including Napoleon) stayed.
The care for the details is present even with the staircases, which one can consider also works of art.
Have I convinced you to visit Melk Monastery ?
It is open daily May-Sept 9 am-6 pm,Oct.-Nov 3 between 9 am-5 pm.Visits between Nov.4 till April are limited to guided tours which go twice a day at 11 am and 2 pm local times Miss the beautiful library room, the church and the park

Map of Melk

I know, I know... this map won't be a great help for you but at least you can see the town planning of Melk.
At the foot of the map (on the left side) you can see the Danube river. And I think you can see the Melk Abby as well.
On that map I marked the Tourist information.

visit this nice monastery, Stift Melk.
The town of Melk is very small but you may see this big monastery from far away. I once started a cruise here into the Wachau. This is something you should make, when you are in Austria !

Beautiful flowers during summer

by victorwkf

My wife and I managed to spot these huge and colourful flowers along the streets of Melk. During summer time, you will be able to see flowers of all colours, shapes and sizes while in Austria and other parts of Europe :)
