Travel Tips for Wiener Neustadt

St Peter an Der Sperr / City Museum

by desert_princess

This former Dominican church and convent, dating from the 13th century, was handed over to the Dominican Monks in 1444 and was remodelled by the imperial architect and master builder Peter von Pusica sometime after the middle of the 15th century. It contains a remarkable Gothic portal on the south side. First the Monastery was secularised in the 16th century, followed later in the 18th century by the church. From 1964 to 1992, the former monastery housed the municipal archives. In 1994 the city museum moved into the old monastery building as well as into an extention built in 1992/ 93. The restored church has been used for art exhibitions since 1966.

Wiener Neustadt - the former imperial city

by desert_princess

"A little bit of History"

In 1194 The Babenberg Duke Leopold V founded "Nova Civitas" in the Valley Between the Rosalien river and Leitha Mountains. A part of the ransom money of the English King Richard the Lionheart was used for the construction of this new city. The town became a significant bastion against Hungarians - a good start for the development of craft and other trades that originated at that time.
The town's most important building - the Parish Church ( Pfarrkirche ) - dates back to the beginning of the 13th century and was made a cathedral in 1469. The four-towered castle complex in the south-east of the town also originates from the 13th century.
In the 15th century the town enjoyed its cultural , political and economic heyday as the residence of Emperor Friedrich III. The frequent presence of the emperor attracted a series of important personages to Wiener Neustadt, triggering off brisk building activity in the town.
In August 1487 the Hungarian king Matthias Corcinius succeeded in conquering Wiener Neustadt after almost two years of siege - Th Corvinius goblet, a gift from the Hungarian monarch to the "valiant" population, is a relic of these times. Not until three years later did the young king Maximilian I , Friedrich III's son, manage to recapture his hometown.
In 1752 Empress Maria Theresia opened a "military college for nobility" at the castle - which later became the Military Academy, Austria's only training facility for officers. In 1998, the courses in the oldest military Academy in the world, received a higher education status
Wiener Neustadt, the former imperial city, is the second largest city of Niederosterreich / Lower Austria /situated at 265 above sea level has more than 37 000 inhabitants.
Once upon a time the whole town was surrounded by fortified walls, from which you can still see the remains today, aswell as the towers that were guarding the corners.

In april 1945 over 52 000 bombs were dropped over the town, making it Austria's most heavily hit target. because of its importance in the war industry in the production of planes and locomotives.
When you walk today through Wiener Neustadt , just remember that the people of this town have a very special skill - despite adverse circumstances, always to start and achieve what seems to be impossible....
As a result to raise the status of education and further training, Wiener Neustadt is now the town with the most schools in Lower Austria. A wide range of renowned establishments, grammar schools, vocational collges, Conservatory and the Military Academy underscore the town's status.
The present "Civitas 'Nova" project demostrates the importance of the economic factor - it represents a new town district with an international business park , offering future-oriented companies everything they expect to find at a modern business location.

"out of Town's history"

In the 16th century Wiener Neustadt lost its importance as royal residence. The original function of a Bastion against the east , was accomplished just once - in 1487 against the troups of the Hungarian king Matthius Corvinius.
In the year 1752, Maria Theresia founded in the Royalty castle a Militar Academy that became soon the most famous Academy for officers of the Monarchy.

Cemetery gates

by desert_princess

"Open up the gates and enter with me..."

I'll take u 4 a visit in this peace garden....

"CEMETERY GATES / PANTERA

The reverend he turned to me
Without a tear in his eyes
It's nothing new for him to see
I didn't ask him why
I will remember
The love our souls had
Sworn to make
Now I watch the falling rain
All my mind can see
Now is your (face)

Well I guess
You took my youth
I gave it all away
Like the birth of a
New-found joy
This love would end in rage
And when she died
I couldn't cry
The pride within my soul
You left me incomplete
All alone as the
Memories now unfold.

Believe the word
I will unlock my door
And pass the
Cemetery Gates

Sometimes when I'm alone
I wonder aloud
If you're watching over me
Some place far abound
I must reverse my life
I can't live in the past
Then set my soul free
Belong to me at last
Through all those
Complex years
I thought I was alone
I didn't care to look around
And make this world my own
And when she died
I should've cried and spared myself some pain...
Left me incomplete
All alone as the memories still remain

The way we were
The chance to save my soul
And my concern is now in vain
Believe the word
I will unlock my door
And pass the Cemetery Gates"

"Here's a map so you don't get lost"

Here's a map so you don't get lost..
See, I'm a good guide....

"In front of you"

In front of you ladies and gents, is this cemetery church ( not really sure, but what else could that be?a crematory? It doesn't have a chimney...)

"On your left side..."

Here it was my biggest surprise...
I was not expecting anything like this....
First I saw the monument with the red star, than the "CCCP" sign...
As I entered I discovered a whole Russian army laying around...Lieutenants were resting in single graves, regular solder's names were all together listed on the back on mass tombstones with "1945" on the top...
All of them sooo young....so far from home.... 20, 22, 24 years old...just kids......
Some tombs were bearing the sign "unknown soldier".....
Women tombstones were here too...

"A Dragon grave"

Another unusual sight was this scale model of a pagoda.......

"A Grave's guardian"

"So many young people laying here..."

No parent deserves to bury his kid....
This is terrible.....

"Weird thing"

Christine---not dead yet, but has already a place?....morbide.....
