by globetrott
The mother of the last Austrian emperor Kaiser Franz Joseph did not get any children and so her doctor sent her to have some baths here in Bad Ischl in the healthy salt-water
. ...and it worked very well and this "success" made Bad Ischl and its salt-spa famous

Bad Ischl is located in Upper Austria, but very close to Styria´s border. Like for example Hallstatt, it is part of Salzkammergut, a lovely area that comprises some parts of Styria, Salzburg and Upper Austria.
In the 19th century Bad Ischl became famous as a health resort. It is said that the marriage of Franz Joseph`s parents initially remained childless for quite a while. But then they went to Bad Ischl to receive some treatments in the health resort- and after each of these cures a new son was born :). Many famous and wealthy people and members of the emperor`s family started to spend summer months in Bad Ischl to relax. Therefore, you can still see some grand buildings. Unfortunately they also constructed quite a couple of really awful new buildings in the post WW II area.
There are some sights to visit in Bad Ischl - most important probably the "Kaiservilla" which used to be the summer get away of emperor Franz Joseph and empress Elisabeth (better known as "Sissi"). Other places of interest are a couple of nice buildings, like Lehartheater or Trinkhalle, a photomuseum and also a spa ("Kaisertherme").
And - last but not least- you should not forget to pay a visit to well-known "Konditorei Zauner" - a patisserie which once delivered to the court. It`s truly old-style and their pastries and cakes still are delicious!
