    The owners of the guesthouse are very kind people. The house is close to the lakeside and the centre too. It's clean, nice, well-equipped and You don't need to take own bedclothes with You. There are three apartments in the house with own kitchen, bath and toilet. The prices of the apartments are between 50 and 100 Euro. You can read more on the website I mentioned below.

    This is a lovely old building sitting right on the lake with a large patio restaurant at lakeside. The room had lovely furnishings like an antique amoire, a very small balcony (that is not really Juliet) and a great view of the lake.

    When we were there in 1998 they had a very unusual breakfast arrangement (included in the price of the room). There was a large spread of cereal (great meusli), meats, breads, cheeses, jams, etc. There were also toasters, skillets and kettles so you could make your own toast or cook your eggs to order. We found it pretty neat.

    I didn't spend the night in Hallstatt (next time I will . . . ) but the best lodging here is usually in a private room which can be arranged for you at the tourist office. You can also book online at the website listed below. Click on your language preference first, then on the link for Accommodations, then on Private Rooms. You'll have a list of options with brief descriptions, phone numbers and an online reservation form if you'd like to book a room.

    There are several cheap places to spend the night in Hallstatt and surroundings ! Unfortunately the Youth hostel obviously does not exist anymore, but check my link below, this web-page is in english as well.

    Even in summer you will find a cheap place to stay, except at very few days, e.g. when the procession will take on the lake. All of the other times Hallstatt is busy for daytourists, but mostly not for people staying there for a few days.

    Hotel Schafbergspitze is in St.Wolfgang im Salzkammergut / 35 km north/west of Hallstatt ! The hotel was built on the very top of Schafberg with a great panorama-view and you may walk up there or take the steamtrain ! Make sure you will not miss sundown and sunset !

    Despite its great location, accomodation there is rather cheap : 48,- €uro per person in the double room, including breakfast AND the mountain-trainfare by steam-train. And as the trainfare is 22,- €uros, you actually pay just 26,- €uros for the room and breakfast

    A lovely place to stay in Hallstatt is the Gasthof Simony. It is a 450 year old house right on the square and less than 5 mins walk from the pier where the boat docks. Frau Susanna was nice and kind, and I was given a room where the view from my balcony was magnificent. It was a great way to relax in the relative quiet with my newspaper and the view of the lake and mountains before me. The bed here was the best I slept in while travelling in Austria, fluffy and soft and comfortable. The facilities were also clean and spotless. Breakfast was more than adequate and was a very delicious and homely affair. A single room with shower and WC on the same floor cost me 35 Euros in very early April.

    -Lovely old building (450 year old) -Friendly owner -Comfortable bed -Very good breakfast -Central location -Reasonable rates

    "Treat yourself and enjoy it so that you can positively remember the most beautiful time of the year." That's the motto at the Hirlatz. Located just under the shadows of the surrounding mountains, the Hirlatz guesthouse is a quaint place to stay and relax. The ensuite rooms are clean and basic, equipped with a TV and comfy beds. A lovely traditional breakfast in the restaurant is also included in the room rate. The staff are mostly family members and who I'm told are staying next door. Their hospitality is wonderful and always greet me warmly. Outside, there is a pretty garden and a creek by the guesthouse flows from Hallstatt Lake There are some treks close to the guesthouse where you can go for a morning walk, and Hallstatt Lake is about 15 minutes walk away. Otherwise, you can take a short drive through the pretty village to the carpark area, and walk to the main town area

    Although the actual name of the place we stayed in escapes me, I do have a photograph of the place. We had no reserations when we arrived in Hallstatt, we merely made arrangements with the girl who worked at the tourist information office. She called ahead to inquire about rooms and let them know we were on our way. the rooms in Hallstatt were more than affordable 20-30 Euros per night per person. We had our choice of three different places. We chose the room highest on the hill thinking it would have a spectacular view of the water, and we were not dissappointed.

    I never plan to visit Hallstatt. I never hear about it. Before arriving Austria, my plan is to visit Vienna and Salzburg. Coincidentally, Hallstatt is located in the middle of Vienna and Salzburg. At first, I just want to make a half day stop in Hallstatt. Then I find that it is so beautiful. It is so relaxing. So then I was looking for the "Frei Zimmer" (Free Room) in the Hallstatt. I was so lucky, for the 1st night (22 Sep 2005) I managed to get a room facing the lake at Bräugasthof - a brown colour guesthouse located near the lake along the main walking path. Euro 42/night. Nice accommodation, good view towards the lake and friendly owner. I don't remember her name but it starts with V. Could be Valerie. Euro 42 comes with good breakfast. It is a home treat. You can have lunch and dinner at the groundfloor restaurant or just outside the house, nearby the lake with very nice view, (I will show you the photo). The location, both inside and outside (open air) are wonderfully decorated. The room is superb. It is an ensuite with bathroom inside the bedroom. The room is very clean and '5 star' decoration. Beautiful. On the next day (23 Sep 2005), no vacancy in Bräugasthof so I moved to her sister's guesthouse. Cheaper, just Euro 30 / night, but WOW! I get another good view towards lake. Will tell you in next accommodation tip in Hallstatt.

    The Bräugasthof was first mentioned in documents in the year 1472. The Emperor Maximilian I awarded the House its right as a brewery while visiting the miner's village of Hallstatt in 1504, and they continued to brew until 1917. They have kept the cosy atmosphere of an ancient tavern to this day, as well as the homeliness of a family-run business. They offer guests all the amenities of modern-day comfort, while maintaning their centuries old tradition. Living in this guesthouse is very recommended. This old house is well-kept and located nearby the lake. Another unique quality is that it was a house for one of the famous artist in 14xx something. And of course it homely treat + good owner. Feel like at home.
