When we were there in 1998 they had a very unusual breakfast arrangement (included in the price of the room). There was a large spread of cereal (great meusli), meats, breads, cheeses, jams, etc. There were also toasters, skillets and kettles so you could make your own toast or cook your eggs to order. We found it pretty neat. The hotel was built on the very top of Schafberg with a great panorama-view and you may walk up there or take the steamtrain !
Make sure you will not miss sundown and sunset !
Despite its great location, accomodation there is rather cheap :
48,- €uro per person in the double room, including breakfast AND the mountain-trainfare by steam-train.

Even in summer you will find a cheap place to stay, except at very few days, e.g. when the procession will take on the lake. All of the other times Hallstatt is busy for daytourists, but mostly not for people staying there for a few days.

We chose to stay at Kraft Tanken because we want to be as near to the lake as we can and it was one of the finest place we found. The owner was nice & the place was very cozy…what’s most important was the scenery!

Frau Susanna was nice and kind, and I was given a room where the view from my balcony was magnificent. It was a great way to relax in the relative quiet with my newspaper and the view of the lake and mountains before me.
The bed here was the best I slept in while travelling in Austria, fluffy and soft and comfortable. The facilities were also clean and spotless.
Breakfast was more than adequate and was a very delicious and homely affair.
A single room with shower and WC on the same floor cost me 35 Euros in very early April.

"Treat yourself and enjoy it so that you can positively remember the most beautiful time of the year." That's the motto at the Hirlatz. Located just under the shadows of the surrounding mountains, the Hirlatz guesthouse is a quaint place to stay and relax. The ensuite rooms are clean and basic, equipped with a TV and comfy beds. A lovely traditional breakfast in the restaurant is also included in the room rate. The staff are mostly family members and who I'm told are staying next door. Their hospitality is wonderful and always greet me warmly. Outside, there is a pretty garden and a creek by the guesthouse flows from Hallstatt Lake
There are some treks close to the guesthouse where you can go for a morning walk, and Hallstatt Lake is about 15 minutes walk away. Otherwise, you can take a short drive through the pretty village to the carpark area, and walk to the main town area

We did not stay at this pension, however I liked Hallstatt so much I inspected this pension in case we ever returned to stay a few days in this beautiful area. The pension is well situated and I was able to enter reception and the meals and lounge and speak with the manager. The general areas I saw were all well furnished, clean and inviting and from what I saw I would stay for a day or two.The web page link below is worth using as it contains photos and prices for each room.
