I'm just starting to put together an itinerary for a spring photography/train trip through Austria. Hallstatt popped up on my radar when I saw a beautiful photograph of a quaint little town on a lake in the mountains (I'm sure you've seen the one I mean in National Geographic Traveler). Limited on time, is Hallstatt visitable in one afternoon, or to truly enjoy the place should I plan to arrive in one morning, and leave the next? Are there any other photo-worthy spots in this town, or nearby which can be accessed by train or easily by foot? I'm planning to go in early May 2010, so will there be greenery at this time or still barren due to cold? Thank you!
I'd stay overnight for two reasons: No one can guarantee you good weather on one particular afternoon. Being there on two days doubles your chances. Besides, Hallstatt is on the western side of the lake and you'll want morning light for 'the' view of the town.
Early May in the Alps is somehow between winter and spring and hard to predict, every year is different.
If time is tight, 1/2 day is enough time. The "National Geographic" part of town is quite small and can easily be explored in a few hours. Hilly and lots of stairs though...
Yes, I heard that since the sun crosses over the mountains around 3pm, it tends to stay colder even in the spring. I also heard there are paddle boats or something you can rent to take photos from the lake (those 'national geog shots!'. Is this true? I suppose most of the best photos are simply taken from the ferry as you cross from the train to the other side? I'll probably watch out for the weather forecast before I get there--probably from Salzbur where we will likely be staying. That way, I can decide whether to make it a 1/2 day or overnight. I'm not much into hilly walking--just got back from a trip to China and climbed Huangshan mountain and so with 72 yr old mother in tow again, will likely take it easy (easier!) this time around pertaining to hillclimbing....!
As you know, I like animals and I saw a number of stray cats in Hallstatt wandering about town. I'm surprised at how fat they were, the people of Hallstatt must love them to feed them till they're this big and quite friendly. I didn't meet one that tried to scratch or bite me.
I offer You to get to the Salt-Mine on foot from the village - if You are in good condition. On the path You can see some closed salt-mine entrance and You can take a lot of deep breath from the fresh and clear air.
Bring a T-shirt in Your bag, becuase You will need to change Your sweaty T-shirt before You visit the Salt-Mine.
To travel through Europe: The history, the romance The castles, the fine wining and dining......and the dirty laundry....
So, while others wine and dined themselves sillly under the candle light on this glorious Austrian evening, I paused to reflect on the days travels....and to wash the diry socks that had accumulated along the way....
Another small museum on top of the mountain where you could see some old findings on the way to the salt mine. There, You can find Hallstatt necropolis. You’ll have to see for yourself the interesting things that you can take a picture of! The sceneries, The Lake & the weather!!!
On the way back from Dachstein we notice that there’s a park nearby Hallstatt just before the tunnel. You can swim near the park during your leisure time and also unwind there. There’s a small store selling some quick bites and also drinks too. The park is also a great place for photography! The sceneries, The Lake & the weather!!!

Q: Sunlight on Halstatt "During May/June, is it best to visit morning or afternoon ,to have sunlight on the village?"
A: "If I recall correctly, Hallstadt is on the west side of the lake, so morning light is what you are after."
