Statue of Adalbert Stifter

Found this on my little walk into the city from our docked ship, the Viking Sky. I walked one block off the main drag and found this small lit statue of Adalbert Stifter who it seems was an Austrian poet, writer, painter and naturalist of some note in Germany, but hardly known in the USA. I love finding little pockets of art throughout the world and finding out a little more about them. Statue by Hans Rathausky.

pictured is the wiener graben, (granite quarry). this huge stone quarry was used to provide building materials for many projects of the third reich. slave labor was used in the quarry. the physical demands on the prisoners was brutal and thousands died there. pictured is the stairway from the bottom of the quarry where prisoners were required to carry 100 lb blocks of granite to the top.

A short stop to see a good friend

We travelled from Munich to Linz via train. We had to change trains at Plattling. Linz is a slow town. My only purpose was to visit a high school penfriend. At home, supper is always hot foods. It was interesting to try the typical dinner at my Claudia's home. There were 4 kinds of ham and several cheese. Surprisingly it was very tasy and filling. On the picture is her husband Klaus and their daughter Julia playing with the geese.

"Linz today gone tomorrow!"

Linz was supposed to be my final destination before flying back to London after a two and a bit week jaunt around Eastern Europe. A particular chain of events put paid to this however and I ended up making a mad dash for the airport at Salzburg instead.
