Travel Tips for Linz
Go to the Salzkammergut...
by tarim
Go to the Salzkammergut (Traunsee, Hallstaedtersee; cities: Gmunden, Traunkirchen,
Bad Ischl, Hallstatt) - if you like to take a bath or go hiking, climbing, skiing - almost
everything is possible here with the powerful alpine landscape in the background (*wow*).
Weather warning: The sun comes up late and goes down quite early. Most days you will encounter clouds and fog - listen to the weather forecast, ask your host.
Mauthausen (more)
by chaistarr
With its heavy stone walls and towers, Mauthausen resembles a castle overlooking the Danube valley just east of Linz, Austria. It was established a few months after the Anschluss of Austria in 1938. The camp was notorious for its deadly labor regime, with many of the prisoners working in the quarry adjacent to the camp. Undernourished prisoners were forced to carry heavy stones on their backs up the 186 steps-the Todessteige, or Stairs of Death-- to the top. Nearly 60% of the almost 200,000 prisoners who passed through Mauthausen perished. American soldiers liberated the camp on May 4, 1945. The walls, towers, and many interior buildings still stand. The area where the SS lived is today a monument park where 21 structures of striking diversity have been erected by countries and ethnic communities.
MAIN SQUARE
by Helga67
In the middle of the Main Square, one of Austria's most attractive closed squares, there stands the 20 m high Baroque Trinity Column (completed in 1723). Carved in white marble by Sebastian Stumpfegger, according to a model from Antono Beduzzi, the column bears three inscriptions. These announce the dedication of the column to the Holy Trinity by the guilds, the Emperor and the people of Linz in gratitude for deliverance from the dangers of war (1704), fire (1712) and plague (1713). The column is flanked by the patron saints Sebastian, Florian and Carlo Borromeo.

"A city without the flashy tourism--LINZ"
Linz is the 3rd largest city in Austria and it was the closest "real" city to me when I lived in Austria. If you really just want to get off the beaten path and be around Austrian sans tourists, then Linz is for you. Make sure you practice some German because you will not find the masses of multilingual service industry workers one finds in Vienna, Salzburg and the ski resorts. The main Hauptstrasse is a nice way to walk through the heart of the city and take it in.
"Moviemento"
A good spot to see more "anspruchsvolle" Films in their original language. I've been here about 2,334 times and can attest to it being a really good time. Nice bar/cafe hooked onto it and really friendly folk.
Address: 4020 Linz, Dametzstraße 30
About a block or two(?) off the main drag unless it has moved.
Linz, Upper-Austria
by mapu
Linz is a major industrial center in Austria. Contrary to that it has a surprisingly nice old town and a beautiful cathedral. It's well worth to stop for a few hours while traveling between Vienna and Salzburg. The picture shows the Hauptplatz (main square). In the middle of the Hauptplatz, one of Austria's most attractive closed squares, there stands the 20 m high Baroque Dreifaltigkeitssaeule (completed in 1723). Carved in white marble by Sebastian Stumpfegger, according to a model from Antono Beduzzi, the column to the Holy Trinity by the guilds, the Emperor and the people of Linz in gratitude for deliverance from the dangers of war (1704), fire (1712) and plaque (1713). The column is flanked by the patron saints Sebastian, Florian and Carlo Borromeo.
