Travel Tips for Mondsee

Rauchhaus - rebuilt in 1950

by globetrott

This great ancient house almost became a victim of the nearby Autobahn / highway.
In 1950 it was taken down piece by piece and rebuilt close to some more old farmhouses of the 15th and 16th century.

Today 8 buildings of different sizes form that interesting museum-village and may be visited from inside on the weekends in summer.

You want to powder your nose?

by globetrott

This is the smallest building of the museum - but it was very important.
It is the old toilet, that was always built outside the house.
Just imagine going there in the middle of winter or during the night. No light there except a candle maybe that you carry with you, and NO heating of course...

Mondsee - Einbaum

by globetrott

An "Einbaum" is a boat that was cut out of a single trunk of a tree.
In the back of my pic you may see a shed that coveres 2 of these ancient boats.

On my pic you also see another type of well, that was mostly the only supply of water on a farm.
Just imagine the strong winters with the frozen wells beeing the only way to wash yourself.

a beehive under the roof

by globetrott

Under the roof you may see a beehive.
This was another step in order to be independent from buying anything in a local store.
Beeing independant and able to produce all goods of everday life was an important goal of all farmers of these ancient times.

Mondsee

by dinhyen

We made the short detour to Mondsee en route from Salzburg to Vienna, for the express purpose of seing the church where Maria married Captain von Trapp. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, me too :) I only became aware of this fact through my Sound of Music-obsessed travel companion.

Q: How do you pronounce Mondsee? "Thank you."

JessH profile photo

A: "Mond means moon. It is pronounced almost like the English word "moaned". See is a lake. I guess it very much sounds like the English word "say" (the "a" is stretched..."
