Beautiful park on Wolfgangsee
by victorwkf
There is a very nice and big park with lots of benches located at the western side of St Wolfgang along the main road, just across the Schafberg train station. The views of the Wolfgangsee lake and mountains here are fantastic. This is perhaps the best place to have a good view of St Gilgen town together with the lake and boats (see photos).
Visit the most famous Operetta
by globetrott
Visit the Operetta by composer Dr. Ralf Benatzky :
"Im Weissen Rössel am Wolfgangsee "
You may see it all over Austria, and it is a funny story :
Head-waiter Leopold of "Weisses Rössl" is in love with the lady , who is also his boss.
He sends her red roses anonymously BUT she thinks, these roses are sent by HER secret love, a lawer from Germany, who will come on vacation once every year.
Leopold finally tells her about his love, but he will be dismissed instead...
Leopold is packing his things, while the austrian Kaiser is on his way to have lunch in "Weisses Rössl" ...
Schafberg, a gem among the Alps
by seamandrew
No trip to St. Wolfgang is complete without taking the Schafbergbahn, a cog-wheel train up to the summit of Schafberg. From there, one has a spectacular view of several mountain ranges and it is said that on the clearest of days, you can see up to 12 lakes. Including the Chiemsee over the border in Germany.
The view up there is truly wonderful and the ride up on the train is great! Trust me when I say no trip to Sankt Wolfgang is complete without a trip up to the summit! Don't forget your camera and a sweater wouldn't hurt either!
Schafberg 360 degrees panorama
by codrutz
Once you arrive to the top of Schafberg mountain with the cogwheel train (the ride itself is a great thing but the views are breathtaking) you go some meters higher and you can admire one of the most beautiful panorama of Europe.
As the Schafberg is in the middle of them you can see at least six lakes. To the south you can see the tall mountains - the Alps with dozens of peaks over 3000 meters. The Dachstein Glacier is visible - one million year glacier that is.
Take at least one hour, better two, to enjoy the panorama, take something to eat at the restaurant and then contemplate more before taking the train down.
Neither pictures or videos can't show the actual feeling of being there and see it live.
I would include this in the 1000 places to see before you die.
Im Weissen Rossl (White Horse Inn)
by victorwkf
The Im Weissen Rossl (White Horse Inn) is one of the most famous landmark in St Wolfgang. This hotel is located at the waterfront area of Wolfgangsee lake, right in the centre of the town. The fame comes because this is the setting for Ralph Benatzky's operetta "The White Horse". Originally I wanted to stay here for 1-2 days but the hotel room facing the lake was beyond my budget, and furthermore I will be staying at Zell Am See (see my VT Zell Am See page) which offers about the same scenery so I do not want a repeat.
As for the hotel itself, I have looked through the internet while planning for my Austria trip and it is really good (5 star standard) especially if you can get a room facing the lake. Also, the swimming pool at this hotel is on the lake itself (see photo) and offers fantastic views while you are enjoying your swim. More photos are at the travelogue section of this VT page, and the hotel website is below.
