St. Wolfgang - more that 1000 years old
by globetrott
Have a look for some interesting facts of the history of St. Wolfgang, that is written on this lovely sign-post next to the church :
St.Wolfgang was given as a donation from the german king Ludwig to the monastery of Mondsee in the year 976
x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x The village of St.Wolfgang soon became an important place for pilgrimage in the 14th-16th century. In 1873 the Schafbergbahn was built and in 1930 the operetta made St.Wolfgang and the "Weisses Roessel" famous all over Europe.
Schafberg

For one of the best views in Austria I'd definitely recommend visiting the mountain that rises above St. Wolfgang. A trip to Schafberg makes for a good half-day (4-5 hours) adventure. There are two ways to get there. You can take the small train from Schafbergbahn (the tiny train station on the western side of town) or you can do it the old-fashioned way and hike up (which will take about 3 hours). The train ride cost 22 Euros when I was there in the summer of 2004.
Once at the top, you can ask the attendant when you get off the train when the next train goes back down. In my case, there was a train going down in a half hour or in another 1 1/2 hours. I decided to take my time up there and wait. It turned out to be a good decision, since I was able to hike around the entire peak and look out over the surrounding lake-swept countryside. There is even a hotel at the top, complete with a restaurant. There is another small restaurant at the top where I enjoyed a Apfelsaft (an apple drink). The views from 1783 meter peak are amazing.
Water so blue, but it's not the Caribbean

You must make your way to the waterfront and see the lake up close. It is astonishing how blue and clear the lake is. Most of the glacial lakes in Austria bear this characteristic which is why the Salzkammergut region (where many of these lakes are found within the Austrian Alps) is so wonderfully beautfiul.
Yes those are my feet, quite stylish don't you think? :-P
Schafberg - panorama

This is the panorama that you will see from the Hotel Schafberg:

Wolfgangsee
Hintersee
Fuschlsee
Mondsee
It is a pity that the 4 pics have different colors, but I am sure you may get an impression, what to expect on the top of Schafberg.
The last train was leaving in St.Wolfgang at 06.00 p.m. and after a ride of 40 minutes I had a stay there of 30 minutes, before the last train was going down again at 07.10 p.m.

Pool and whirlpool at the lake
by codrutz
The most respectable hotel in Sankt Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee has beside probably nice rooms this unique feature, a pool and a whirpool (with hot water probably) right near the lake. Both are private and accessible only to hotel guests.
But privacy is not quite good because every tourist that comes to see the lake from the base of the town's church can see all their bathing activity.
