I will be in Salzburg July 25-28 and thought it would be during the festival. I see most tickets are sold out. Is there any music outdoors that you can enjoy in the evening without going to something that requires a ticket. I am willing to purchase one but it seems difficult.
You seem to be in luck on the 25th! The 24th and 25th is the festival opening ceremonies and there appears to be a lot of free events going on! See this:

Thank you. I guess I should book a place to stay. I have a couple in mind that are still open. Do you have any recommendations? Hotel or otherwise? This is sort of a last minute trip.
Is there a specific area you would recommmend to find an apt or hotel. We will not be driving this trip. Would the area by the "old town" be where we want to walk to these festivities? THANK U!

Can recommend highly the Hotel Weisse Taube in the old town behind the Dom. It's a family run hotel which is housed in a building that is hundreds of years old and full of atmosphere. Only minutes from anything you want to see or do in the Old Town. I would imagine that some of the events will be held in the Toscani Platz area (I think that's how it should be written)near the famous horsewash. This being the case, the hotel would be less than a ten minute walk away. Good service, tariff includes a good breakfast. Very helpful staff. Details on my Salzburg Page Hotel Tips. Mönchsberg is a small hill - and you may walk to the top or take an elevator - the charge is about 2,- € for both ways and from Mönchsberg you will have a great view of the city, see the river Salzach and the castle
Since march 2003 this lift and the terrace are closed, due to reconstruction works ! The way it looked it will NOT be open again before end of 2004 !!!

The fortress can be reached on foot by the city below.First build up back to 11th centuries and rebuild in the 16th centuries. The former princely apartments now house the fortress museum with displays of weapons, guild emblems and other personal object belong Prince Archibishop Wolfgang.

THE CHECK/BILL: Many restaurants in Salzburg and Europe won't give you a check or bill until you ask for it because it is customary for the locals to sit and talk for a long time; whereas, tourists more likely want to eat quickly and go see more cool stuff. Ask for your check when your done or almost done eating to ensure a quick escape.
