Which salt mine to visit?
by neelv
I am confused as to which salt mine to visit... I have run across three so far, one in berchtesgaden, other in Hallein and one in Hallstat. I will have a car so transportation is not really an issue.
I will be going to Eagle's nest one day, so berchtesgaden would be the most convenient but I don't mind driving to the other ones if they are better. any suggestions?
I plan to be in salzburg for three days, so one day in salzburg, one day at eagle's nest and at the salt mines.
Also, heard that they are some good concerts in the city, any recommendations?
Can I drive myself to sound of music locations myself? Is there a map or guide available?
thanks,

You haven't given any specifics as to when you are planning to go, so my answers will have to be pretty generic.
I've been the salt mine in Berchesgaden twice and had fun both times, so I have no issues recommending it. It won't take you all day - really just around an hour, so I would suggest you plan some other activites the same day. I suspect that you can combine it with the Eagle's Nest as one trip.
A couple of other places you migh want to consider in the Salzburg area - Ice Caves and Hohenwerfen Castle, in Werfen, Austria. You should plan for a full day for this.
Hellbrunn palace just outside of Salzburg - wonderful water features (be prepared to get wet). This would be a 1/2 day outing.

Hi GRumpy. If you've seen one salt mine, have you seen them all?!

I also would recommend Hellbrunn. We have been to two concerts in the city and both were excellent. We went to a concert in the Fort/Castle and the concert itself was great, however, we got stuck with a dinner as part of the package and it was terrible. The dinner was the restaurant at the top of the tram and the food, as well as the service could not have been worse! The second concert was located outside next to the church. It was excellent! Also, there is a great marionette show near Mozart's house that shouldn't be missed.

Hi
We've been to the saltmine in Hallein. It has some kind of giant slides to slide down several metres (2 slides in fact). Just keep in mind that in case you're travelling with kids, they aren't allowed to enter before the age of 4.
Nearby there is also a recnstruction of a Celtic village.
Other nice visits in the area are indeed the Eagle's nest & the ice caves in Werfen. The castle Hohenwerfen is my favorit in the wide area, we've already visited it about 8 times so far and keep going back every time !
Also the area known as Salzkammergut with all the big lakes is very beautiful.
Bad Ischl is also a nice town. It has the "Kaiservilla", one of the villas owned by Franz-Joseph and Sissi. In Bad Ischl you can also visit the house of the composer Franz Léhar.
I think you won't have any problems filling your days in the Salzburg area !
Have fun !

Wow thanks for all the suggestions...
I will be there from 9 oct to 12 Oct?
Is there a good website to search for apartments in salzburg area? Also any websites to search for concerts during this time period?
thanks,

OMG - Visit Saint Bartoloma in Berchtesgaden. It's one of the prettiest places on earth.
Travel Tips for Salzburg
City of a thousand pictures
by WrigleyTodd
Salzburg is a city with amazing photo opportunities. Almost every corner you turn, door you open or square you enter is filled with amazing sites for photos. I highly recommend bringing a lot of film, including black and white film. Or, for the digital users, get a large storage card. I used a 64 MB for my week long trip to Salzburg and Prague and it lasted the entire trip, including being used for all high res photos and several 2 minute long videos.
Siegmundstor or Neutor
by imran8852
Upon entering the old town one cannot help but to notice the sturdy construction of the tunnel even though it was built between 1764 and 1767. One of the examples of the magnificent old architectural work that still stood strong unchallenged by the urban modernization The City & The Weather!
Learn the Dome
by WrigleyTodd
Learn as much history about the Dome/Cathedral as possible. It has some interesting stories to it. For instance, it was once bombed by an American fighter plane. That's not the best of the story yet. There was a priest inside the Dome when the bomb dropped and his experience made him write a church song about it. You can still hear the song played from time to time during mass (yes, every weekend there is still service here) and, what's funny, is that the song sounds like a bomb dropping with the noise of an object falling through the air and getting closer and then large percussion and blasts. Interesting history.
Gluwein
by kentishgirl
I soooo fell in love with this typical Austrian drink when I was here in Salzburg!
It will certainly warm you up on a cold winters day....well it did me anyways!
Gluwein is like a mulled wine...red wine which is served warm in a mug with spices...soooooooo yummmy!!
Salzburger Nockerln
by Leipzig
Salzburger Nockerln is a famous and delicious dessert. It is a light and fluffy dessert, consisting mainly of stiffly beaten, sweetened egg-whites, is browned quickly in a hot oven and served immediately.
You need:
4 eggs
4 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon vanilla
2 tablespoon sugar
1/3 cup cherry brandy ( optional )
Separates the eggs and beat the egg whites until they cling to the beater. Then add sugar and beat until stiff. Beat the yellow part of the eggs in a small bowl with vanilla and flour.
Stir a tablespoon of egg whites into the yolk-flour mixture. Fold the resulting mixture into the beaten egg whites carefully.
Butter an medium size baking dish. Make three mounds of batter in the dish. Bake on the oven's center shelf for 10-12 minutes until lightly browned but still soft on the inside.
Cut in strips and serve with flaming cherry brandy or just take powdered sugar.
I hope you could understand. Writing recipes in another language is quite difficult. If something is unclear please drop me a mail.
