There are also local buses, crossing the border. You can find out details here, in German only, sorry:

We took the bus some years ago, it took longer then the train, but the ride was very pleasant, as we could see more of the area around Salzburg.

Travel Tips for Salzburg

Learn a little german

by pili

German is the official languaje in Salzburg. You will usually have no problem finding people who speak English in hotels and restaurants; but in stores, bus and railway station it?s hard to find someone who speaks English. All public announements on trams, subways and buses are in German. Try to find young austrians, because many of them speak english

Water wonderland

by BLewJay

In 1612 Salzburg's Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus von Hohenems commissioned a country residence to be built at the foot of the Hellbrunn Mountain. He requested that the famous Cathedral architect, Santino Solari, design a "villa suburbana" (a summer residence) that would match the elegance and spaciousness of the Italian architecture with which he was so obsessed. Within a relatively short period of time an architectural masterpiece was created just south of the city that remains one of the most magnificent Renaissance buildings north of the Alps: the Lustschloss ("pleasure palace") of Hellbrunn with its spacious park and its unique Wasserspiele (trick fountains).

This photo was taken at the Hohensalzburg Fortress.
It was an amazing sight, all you could see from my MUST SEE TIPS PHOTOS.
Bruno took the photo from a distance, I looked small....
....well, for the memory that I was there at the fortress....

Salzburger Nockerln - Sweet Tender Kiss Dessert

by Anjutka

As much here in Salzburg this famous dessert is very charactersitic for it - blown up and empty to make just a big show, just like the Cathedral or the Mirabell palace (but I do not mean the wonderful Mirabell garden).

You can get this dessert in all typically local Salzburg restaurants, the minimal order is a serving for two persons.
Most Salzburg inhabitants are eating it there and not preparing it at home because it needs some skills to make so much out of so little. When you see the Salzburger Nockerl for the first time you will almost be shocked by their incredible size and think that you would never be able to eat all that. but since most of it is air it is easy. The main ingredients besides the air are eggs, flour and sugar and some cranberry jam is served to it.

Since this area is inevitably connected with the commercial Sound of Music the tourism managers in the early past century ordered an Operetta composer (I forgot his name, maybe it is the one of the "White Horse") to include a song praising the Salzburger Nockerln being "Suess wie die Liebe und zart wie ein Kuss" (as sweet as love and as tender as a kiss...).

It is a dessert with a funny component at least.
