St Peter's Abbey Courtyard.....
My BF and I are traveling by train from Venice to Salzburg on an "overnight" train that will have us arriving in Salzburg at 4:05am. Does anyone know if there are places to sit/sleep/hang out in the train station until about 8:00am with no one bothering us?

In your case, I expect more places for hanging out to be available, for example a bakery or a cafe that might open around 6. I can't remember how the main waiting hall looked like, but certainly there should be more sitting places there. And it will be opened at 5 or 6 in the morning at the latest.

The most important place to go are the ICE CAVES.Also lovely are the Werfen Castle and not to mention the Sound of Music Tour.I would recommend that you do the tour all by yourself than with the Tours/Agent. The visit to the Werfen Castle was amazing.The great Hawkes and Eagles show you see there is mind-blowing
While walking around any historic town or city center make sure to look in every open door and look around every corner as you just never know what you will find. Many of the old city centers have been built and rebuilt so many times that objects of interest may have been built around. Remember to not just walk into someone’s home or to stare into someone’s window but do look around. Ya just never know what you might find.

Romanesque, Roccoco & all things nice art-wise from those periods are displayed here, intact with the colours that they were used to embraced visitors & philgrims alike.
This is probably not really a local custom, however like many places in Austria a life size Chess board with pieces is likely to be in the city somewhere!
In Salzburg it's behind the Cathredral. There are a couple people who seem to run the Chess games (I say 'run' in a very relaxed sense of the word). Basically turn up, sit down and watch if you want or get involved. It's a great way to while away some spare time.
Salzburg is one of Europe's most photogenic cities, so be sure to bring you best camera equipment. A wide angle and telephoto lens are essential and a polarizing filter will make those blue skies pop out on film.
