Latino Bar in the Center
Always worth a visit. The Pepe Gonzales, a small bar behind Hotel Stein. Latin Music & Dancing, many Latinos, good drinks. Daily 6:30pm to 3am. Like you feel comfortable.

The Hotel Stein was perfect. We had a nice buffet breakfast each morning, and the coolest thing about the hotel is the restaurant that sits atop the hotel. The view from the restaurant was awesome.
We spent a night at the Hotel Stein. We arrived early morning 18th January and checked out the 19th.
Location:
Across from the old town (literally 2 minutes walk across the bridge).
Due to location, the hotel directly lies on a cross road that is a main road and a bridge to the old town. So it will be pretty noisy at night from people (some drunk) walking on the streets and cars passing by.
Staff:
Rather friendly and helpful in terms of suggestions and tips. Could have been friendlier and more helpful.
Hotel interior:
Really nice since its not your typical victorian style or "plain hotel" style decor. Its more of an Art Hotel, even though the building itself is I think more than 300 years old.
Rooms:
Large wooden floor rooms (ours was facing the Salzac river and the old town). Heater in the bathroom was a great addition (warmed our towels nicely).
Breakfast:
Very simple, not a huge variety to choose from.
I would definitely suggest this hotel if the Hotel Sacher (near by) is booked full.

Newly renovated cafe on top of an Hotel; beautiful view over the old-town.
Open daily 11.00-24.00
We stayed at the Hotel Stein, which was located along the Salzach River in the central part of town. The hotel is within a few feet of the Old Town, Mirabell Garden, and Mozart's residence. The hotel's bar and restaurant was located on the roof, and provided a wonderful view of the city and the Hohensalzburg Fortress. I've included a photo I took while eating lunch at the Hotel Stein. I would definitely recommend this hotel.
For the Sound of Music fans, we took a bike ride (I forgot the name of the company) which took us through Salzburg and the surrounding area for a view of the locations where the movie was shot. You know, the outside locations where the movie was filmed. Here's a photo of the Von Trapp house, does it look familiar?

Hi Folks
we are thinking of a little adventure in July to take in a couple of pre-season football matches, maybe call on some relatives and generally enjoy part of the world we have not visited before. It has to be on a budget so we are thinking of flying into Zurich and home from Vienna (for which I can get good flight prices) and then doing the rest by train. So far the itinerary is flight to Zurich 14th July arriving middayish, match with 8pm kick off in St Gallen on 15th, match with 7.15pm kick off in Vienna 19th, fly home from Vienna early on 20th. I therefore need a lot of help in between!
possibly stay in Zurich 14th?
train or bus from Zurich to St Gallen 15th?
stay St Gallen 15th
travel by train to Vienna 16th - 18th? Stops? Routes? Suggestions?
places to stay in Vienna 18th & 19th?
all suggestions will be welcome :)
Chris
I wouldn't stay in Zurich for sure (that's a very expensive place), I'd arrive then head to St. Gallen (it's only an hour away). I would next head toward Innsbruck, stay there or if you're interested, drive a little further to Salzburg. A great hotel in Innsbruck in the Old Towne is the Weisse Kruez and its at a reasonable price for the great location. If you go to Salzburg, try the Hotel Stein, it's a great hotel by the river. Innsbruck is a two hour drive from Gallen, Salzburg will be a four hour drive and you'll drive through some awesome parts of southern Germany. The drive from Gallen to Vienna will be 6.5 hours, so the train will be longer. I would divide the trip into two segments. In Vienna, try the Hotel Pension Corvinus. Family owned and clean.
also, visit my videos on my homepage. you'll see , Vienna, Innsbruck, and Salzburg.
Thanks Johnny - your videos are excellent (and what a lovely family you have). I've saved your tips to my folder for this trip.
